한국 희곡사에서 여성 작가의 활동이 최초로 태동한 시기는 1930년대이다. 그러나 본격적으로 두각을 나타낸 것은 1960년대에 이르러서이다. 그 선두에 특히 희곡 분야에는 김자림이 있다. 1959년 등단한 김자림은 여성 문제뿐만 아 니라 다양한 사회·정치적 문제까지 텍스트에 폭넓게 수용하여 작품 세계를 심도 있게 구축하였다. 본고는 1971년 출간된 작품집 『이민선』에 수록된 희곡 8편 전체를 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 우선 텍스트 전반의 주요 모티브인 가족 구성원간의 갈등에 초점을 맞추어 개별 작품을 분석하고, 나아가 작품집 전체를 관통 하는 작가의 문제의식과 인물 유형의 특징을 고찰하였다. 특히 개인의 내적 갈 등은 물론 가족·이웃과의 갈등, 나아가 인물이 속한 사회 및 지배담론과의 대립 양상까지 검토하였다. 그 결과 개인적·경제적·국가적 이데올로기가 각각 개인의 욕망, 근대화·자본화의 논리, 반공 이데올로기와 맞물리며 가족 분열과 해체의 원인으로 작동하고 있음을 확인하였다. 본론 2장에서는 김자림의 텍스트에서 남성 인물보다 상대적으로 다양하게 나타나는 여성 인물을 유형화하고 그 주된 특징과 여성성 구현 양상을 분석하였다. 이어 3장에서는 작품의 배경이 되는 공 간에 주목하여, 불가피한 선택지로서의 국가, 무분별하게 산업화된 도시, 여성 의 유폐를 상징하는 방 등을 중심으로 인물의 욕망 구도가 어떻게 구현되었는 지 살펴보았다. 요컨대 김자림의 『이민선』은 1960년대라는 시대 상황을 사실적이고도 문제 적으로 재현하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 김자림의 텍스트는 당시의 시공간 속에 실제로 존재했을 법한 다양한 인물의 욕망과 현실 인식, 그리고 당면 과제 들을 구체적으로 형상화하고 있었다. 특히 여성 주체가 맞닥뜨린 현실적 좌절과 한계는 물론, 억압된 욕망을 섬세하고 내밀하게 그려냈다는 점에서 김자림의 1960년대 희곡 텍스트는 독자적인 의의와 선구적 가치, 그리고 주목할 만한 문 학사적 위상을 충분히 지닌다고 평가할 수 있다.

This study analyzes all eight plays in The Emigrant Ship, a collection of plays by Kim Ja-rim published in 1971. First, it examines the individual works with a focus on conflicts among family members, which function as a main motif throughout the entire text, and then explores the writer’s awareness of issues in the entire collection of works as well as the characteristics and types of figures represented in the plays. The study also covers conflicts within families and between neighbors, along with individuals’ internal struggles, and extends its coverage to the ruling discourse with the society to which the characters belong. The work depicts how individual, economic, and national ideologies are intricately intertwined with individuals’ desires, the logic of modernization and capitalization, and anti-communist ideology, all of which eventually contribute to tearing or even ripping families apart. In particular, Chapter 2 in this study classifies the female characters who feature relatively more diverse types of figures compared to male counterparts in Kim Ja-rim into several categories and analyzes their characteristics and expressions of femininity. Chapter 3 focuses on the spatial background of the plays, paying particular attention to the nation as an inevitable choice, the devastation of indiscriminately industrialized cities, and the confined domestic spaces occupied by women, thereby examining the broader structure of the characters’ desires across the works. In conclusion, The Emigrant Ship by Kim Ja-rim demonstrates the vivid picture of the ordinary people’s lives back in the 1960s through unfiltered lens in a realistic and straightforward manner. It also brilliantly portrays the desires and perceptions of reality among various figures who existed back in the days and places along the circumstances of the times through realistic reconstruction and reproduction. In particular, Kim Ja-rim’s plays in the 1960s deserve more than a distinguished recognition in literary history as well as their independent significance and value in that they superbly portray the repressed desires of women, along with their awareness of reality, frustration, and structural limitations.
