전란 발발 직후, 장성 일대에서는 다른 지역과 마찬가지로 사족을 중심으로 의병이 조직되었다. 이들은 장성 남문에 의병청을 두고 군사와 군량을 확보했다. 장성남문 의병진을 이끌었던 이들은 김경수, 김신남, 김제민, 김중기 형제, 김언욱 형제 등이었다. 그중 김경수가 倡義를 전후하여 기록을 남겼는데, 그의 기록을 살펴보면 전란기 현실 인식과 위태로운 현실 속에서의 처신 그리고 그 안쪽에 실재하고 있는 처신의 의리를 발견할 수 있다. 김경수는 의병진의 구성과 항전의 호소, 인민의 동원 등에 관한 내용을 기록으로 남겼다. 그가 남긴 기록은 단순히 한 개인의 의리와 행동을 드러내고 있다기보다 장성남문 의병진이라고 하는 집단의 의사를 구체적으로 반영하고 있다. 김경수의 기록을 살펴보면 조선은 대대로 태평성대를 이루고 있던 나라였고, ‘섬 오랑캐’인 일본이 평온한 조선을 침범한 것이었다. 그의 기록에 따르면, 조선은 건국 이래로 堯王, 周代 등 盛世에 비견되는 통치질서를 정비한 국가였다. 장성 일대의 사족은 조선이 몇 대를 거듭하며 교화를 실천했고, ‘오랑캐’인 일본이 무도하게 침해했다는 지점을 지적하며 항전 의식을 드높였다. 장성남문 의병진 창의의 배경과 근거를 보다 명확하게 규명하기 위해서는 의병진 구성원의 사유, 현실 인식, 현실 인식을 통한 행동으로의 이행이 면밀하게 검토되어야 한다.

Upon the outbreak of the Japanese invasion in 1592, the local literati in Jangseong, in Jeolla Province, voluntarily formed a Righteous Army, the same as in other regions. Establishing its headquarters at the southern gate of Jangseong, the army mobilised troops and procured military provisions. Kim Kyeongsu, one of the militia leaders, documented the overall process of forming the Righteous Army and its preparations to resist the Japanese invasion. A close examination of his documents reveals contemporary perceptions regarding war and what conduct was appropriate during such a perilous national crisis. At their core was a strong sense of duty and loyalty to protect the nation and its people. His documents clearly reflect the collective intentions of the Jangseong Nammun Righteous Army, rather than simply expressing individual duty or personal sincerity. The local literati of the Jangseong region stressed that the Joseon Dynasty aimed to implement a moral policy that was designed to lead the populace toward humanity, while ‘the barbarians’ of Japan violated the Joseon Dynasty with their savage nature. This perspective strengthened their spirit of resistance.
