민족의 하위 개념으로 부족이 있으며, 부족의 하위 개념으로 여러 갈래로 나뉘는 부족이 있다. 속말말갈은 말갈을 구성하는 여러 부족 중의 하나로 북류송화강 유역, 과거 부여의 영역에 거주하던 말갈인이었다. 고구려는 서기 280년에 말갈을 공격하여 이들 중 일부를 부여의 남쪽으로 사민 하였고, 이후에도 말갈인들을 사민 하였을 개연성이 있다. 부여도 강성했을 때는 말갈인들을 자국의 영역으로 사민 하였을 것이다. 부여의 북쪽, 즉 흑룡강의 북쪽에도 말갈인들이 거주하고 있었다. 이들도 서쪽으로 이주하여 부여의 서북쪽에 거주하게 되었다. 고구려가 부여를 점령한 이후에는 고구려의 북쪽에 거주하던 돌지계 집단과 고구려는 자주 충돌하였다. 이후 돌지계 집단은 수에 투항하였다가, 당나라에 귀속되어 고구려를 공격하였다. 고구려는 복속하고 있던 말갈인들을 동원하여 수나 당과 전투를 하였다. 이러한 전투는 고구려가 멸망한 이후에도 고구려에 복속되었던 말갈인들은 고구려 저항군과 함께 돌지계의 아들인 이근행과 전투를 벌이기도 하였다.

Tribe is a sub-concept of ethnicity, and tribes are further divided into various branches. Sokmalmalgal is one of the many tribes that make up Malgal. They were the Malgal people who lived in the Northflow Songhua River(北流 松花江) basin, formerly the territory of Puyeo. Goguryeo attacked Malgal in 280 and resettled some of them to the south of Puyeo, and it is likely that they resettled the Malgal people thereafter. Puyeo, when it was strong, may have resettled the Malgal people to its territory. Malgal people also lived north of Puyeo, north of Heilongjiang(黑龍江). They also migrated westward, settling in the northwest of Puyeo. After Goguryeo occupied Puyeo, there were frequent clashes between Goguryeo and the Doljigye(突地稽) group living north of Goguryeo. The Doljigye(突地稽) group surrendered to the Sui(隋) dynasty, but was later subjugated by the Dang(唐) dynasty and attacked Goguryeo. Goguryeo mobilized the Malgal people it had subjected to and fought against the Sui(隋) and Dang(唐). Even after Goguryeo's downfall, the Malgal people who had been subjected to Goguryeo fought alongside the Goguryeo resistance forces against Lee Geun-haeng(李謹行), the son of Doljigye(突地稽).
