메이지천황이 사망한 이후 그를 추모하는 시설이 메이지신궁으로 귀결된이유는, 근대 국가의 건설 및 ‘제국 일본’의 확립과 관련된 역사적 사건들을모두 메이지천황이라는 한 개인의 카리스마에 의한 ‘개인적 영광’으로 치환하고, 이를 통해서 일본인 전체에게 천황에 대한 신민으로서 ‘일본인’이라는정체성을 만들어냈기 때문이다. 물론 이것은 어디까지나 메이지신궁 건설의 주체를 ‘일본인’만으로 설정했을 때 가능한 타협이었다. 하지만 메이지신궁은 그 기획 단계에서부터‘제국 일본’의 모든 신민을 주체로 설정하였다. 또한 ‘제신’ 메이지천황은 조선신궁 건설 이후 만주를 포함한 ‘제국 일본’의 ‘해외 신사’로도 확산되었다. 그러나 어디까지나 메이지천황은 점령지 등에 가류하는 일본인을 통합하는제국 ‘일본’의 제신에 머물 수밖에 없었기 때문에, 1945년 8월 15일 ‘제국일본’의 패망과 함께 해외신사는 파괴될 수밖에 없었다.

The Meiji Shrine became a memorial for Emperor Meiji after his death because the historical events surrounding the construction of the modern nation and the establishment of “Im-perial Japan” were replaced by the“personal glory” of one individual, Emperor Meiji. This led to the construction of a national“Japanese” identity and the position of ordinary Japanese as subjects of the Emperor. How- ever, this was a compromise under the assump-tion that the Meiji Shrine was built by the“Japanese” alone. The Meiji Shrine was de-signed to include all the subjects of Imperial Japan. Additionally, after the construction of the Chosen Shrine in Ko- rea, the“deified spirit” of Emperor Meiji spread to“overseas shrines” in “Imperial Japan,” including Manchuria. However, as Emperor Meiji could only integrate the Japanese residing in occupied territories of Imperial“Japan,” the over-seas shrines were destroyed on August 15, 1945, with the defeat of Imperial Japan.
