본 연구는 반려동물 수분해 장묘의 제도화 가능성을 분석하여 한국 사회의 지속.가능한 장묘문화 전환 방 안을 모색하였다. 이를 위해 국내·외 장묘 제도, 사회 인식, 수분해 기술의 환경·경제 효과, 해외 사례를 문헌조사 와 비교분석으로 검토하였다. 수분해 장묘는 화장 대비 탄소 배출을 75～90% 줄이고 에너지 사용을 크게 절감하 는 친환경·경제적 장점이 확인되었다. 그러나 현행 폐기물 분류, 공공시설 부족, 문화·종교적 저항 등으로 제도 도 입은 지연되고 있다. 이에 법적 지위 재정립, 공공 인프라 확충, 사회적 수용성 제고가 핵심 과제로 도출되었다. 아울러 국내 실증 자료의 축적과 이해관계자 협력이 정책 실행의 필수 조건으로 제시된다. 본 연구는 수분해 장묘 가 기후위기 대응과 ESG 요구에 부합하는 지속가능한 장묘문화 모델로 발전하기 위한 근거를 제시한다.

This study analyzed the feasibility of institutionalizing pet hydrolytic burial to explore sustainable burial culture transition strategies for Korean society. To this end, domestic and international burial systems, social perceptions, the environmental and economic effects of hydrolytic technology, and overseas cases were reviewed through literature surveys and comparative analysis. Hydrolytic burial was confirmed to offer eco-friendly and economic advantages, reducing carbon emissions by 75-90% compared to cremation and significantly cutting energy consumption. However, its institutional adoption is delayed due to current waste classification issues, insufficient public facilities, and cultural/religious resistance. Consequently, redefining its legal status, expanding public infrastructure, and enhancing social acceptance emerged as key tasks. Furthermore, accumulating domestic empirical data and fostering stakeholder cooperation are presented as essential conditions for policy implementation. This study provides the basis for hydrolytic burial to evolve into a sustainable burial culture model that aligns with climate crisis responses and ESG requirements.
