본 연구는 전공자율선택제의 도입과 운영에 대한 철학적 성찰을 통해 교육 제도의 혁신적 변화를 분석한다. 전공자율선택제는 학생들에게 전공을 자유롭게 탐색하고 선택할 수 있는 기회를 제공하며, 기존의 전공 중심 교육에서 벗어나 자율성과 선택권을 강조하는 새로운 접근이다. 이러한 제도적 운영은 학생들에게 전공 탐색의 자율성을 부여하는 혁신적 제도로 평가받지만, 성공적인 정착을 위해서는 단순한 학사 구조 개편을 넘어선 교육 철학적 토대가 필요하다. 이에 본 연구는 조선 후기 실학자 정약용의 ‘인생팔미(人生八味)’ 사상을 핵심 분석 틀로 삼아, 전공자율선택제가 추구해야 할 전인적(全人的) 교육 모델을 제시하고자 한다. 정약용의 인생팔미는 지적 탐구, 관계 형성, 자아실현 등 삶의 여덟 가지 맛을 통해 인간의 균형 잡힌 성장을 강조하는 실천적 지혜를 담고 있다. 또한 인생팔미의 각 가치를 서양의 현대 철학적 논의와 연결하여 그 보편성을 확인하고, 이를 바탕으로 전공자율선택제가 단순한 진로 선택 제도를 넘어, 학생들이 삶의 다채로운 의미를 스스로 발견하고 실현해 나가는 ‘자기 창조의 과정이 될 수 있는 철학적, 교육적 함의를 도출하였다.

This study examines the transformative potential of the Major Autonomy System through a philosophical inquiry into its educational foundations. By granting students the freedom to explore and select their majors, the system departs from conventional discipline-centered models and foregrounds autonomy and choice. Its successful institutionalization, however, demands more than structural reform; it requires a robust philosophical basis. To this end, the study employs late Joseon scholar Jeong Yak-yong’s concept of Insaeng Palmi (Eight Tastes of Life) as an interpretive framework, which underscores holistic human development through intellectual pursuit, relational engagement, and self-realization. By situating these values in dialogue with contemporary Western philosophy, the study demonstrates their universality and derives implications that position the system not merely as a mechanism of career choice but as a process of self-creation through which students uncover and embody diverse meanings of life.f-creation in which students discover and realize diverse meanings of life.
