This paper is significant in that it presents suggestions for future research tasks and specific research directions, based on the analysis results of research trends in smart tourism, which is emerging as an important research area in the tourism field, through a systematic literature review. To achieve the research objectives, a systematic literature review was conducted using the RISS Database. Searches were performed using combinations of the keywords “smart tourism” and “smart tourism city.” The search period was set from 2014, the year when the first smart tourism paper was published (Koo, Kim, & Jeong, 2014), to June 2025. The search yielded a total of 117 academic papers and 31 dissertations. Among the 117 academic papers, 80 were identified as belonging to the tourism field. Subsequently, papers that did not align with the analysis objectives were duplicates, or lacked critical analysis beyond simple technical introductions or case studies were excluded. Based on these criteria, a total of 73 academic papers and 25 dissertations were ultimately selected for analysis. The research findings indicate that smart tourism expands the methodological horizons of tourism studies by requiring interdisciplinary convergence across fields such as tourism studies, information technology and urban planning. Furthermore, smart tourism research centered on tourist experiences has accelerated the establishment of qualitative research methodologies such as service design and user experience (UX) analysis, which can provide a foundation for empirical studies responding to future changes in the tourism industry. From a practical perspective, it emphasizes the importance of designing customized services that consider tourists’ digital literacy gaps and developing user-centered interfaces. It also highlights that successful implementation of smart tourism city projects necessitates collaboration between the central government, local governments, and private companies, along with differentiated strategies tailored to regional characteristics.
