본 논문은 목회신학이 지닌 전통적인 고난 중심 패러다임이 내담자의 삶을 온전히 담 아내지 못하는 한계를 지적하며, 복음의 본질인 ‘기쁨’을 목회 돌봄과 상담의 핵심으 로 복원하고 상담자를 ‘기쁨의 매개자(mediator of joy)’로 재정립할 것을 제안한다. 이를 위해 ‘창조-타락-구속-완성’의 구속사적 틀 안에서 기쁨의 신학적 토대를 제시 한다. 여기서 기쁨은 세속적 쾌락이나 긍정적 감정 상태를 넘어 창조 세계의 선함에 깊이 뿌리내리며, 타락으로 왜곡되었으나 그리스도의 구속을 통해 고통의 현실 속에 서도 역설적으로 회복되고 하나님 나라에서 완성되는 변증법적 실재로 이해된다. 이 신학적 준거 틀을 바탕으로, 본 연구는 칼 로저스의 공감적 경청, 하인츠 코헛의 자기 대상 욕구, 이야기 치료의 서사 재구성 등 인간의 관계적 갈망과 의미 추구를 다루는 심리학적 통찰들을 비판적으로 수용하고 신학적으로 재구성하여 심리적으로 설득력 있고 신학적으로 견고한 상담의 틀을 마련한다. 연구의 핵심 기여는 이러한 통합적 논의를 통해 ‘기쁨의 매개자’ 모델을 정립한 데 있다. ‘매개자’라는 용어는 기쁨의 주 권이 인간의 노력이 아닌 하나님께 있음을 분명히 하며, 이는 안젤라 손의 ‘기쁨의 행 위자’(agent of joy) 개념에서 더 나아가 내담자가 하나님의 기쁨을 경험하도록 동행 하는 신학적 겸손과 관계적 역할을 강조한다. 나아가 본 연구는 3단계 상담 모델을 제안한다. 1단계 ‘안전한 애통의 공간 마련’은 고통 속에 함께하시는 하나님의 임재에 근거하여 내담자의 고통을 판단 없이 수용하고 깊이 공감하는 환대의 공간을 제공한 다. 2단계 ‘구속사적 이야기로의 초대’는 개인의 파편화된 고통 서사를 구원의 거대 서사와 연결하여 자신의 이야기를 은혜의 관점에서 재해석하도록 돕는다. 마지막 3단 계 ‘기쁨의 내면화’는 회복된 기쁨이 성품과 삶의 태도로 이어지도록 돕는 과정으로, 이 단계에서 신경과학과 긍정심리학의 통찰을 유기적으로 통합하여 기쁨의 체화 (embodiment) 과정을 구체화한다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 기쁨을 목회상담의 핵심 자 원으로 재조명하고, 단순한 문제 해결을 넘어 내담자의 전인적 번성을 돕는 목회신학 적 통합 모델을 제시함으로써 목회상담의 이론적, 실천적 지평을 확장하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

This paper seeks to restore ‘joy,’ an essence of the Gospel, as a central theme in pastoral care and counseling, moving beyond the limitations of the traditional suffering-focused paradigm in pastoral theology. To this end, it aims to establish a new identity for the pastoral counselor: the “Mediator of Joy.” This paper builds a theological foundation within the redemptive-historical framework of ‘Creation-Fall-Redemption-Consummation.’ Here, joy is understood not merely as secular pleasure or a positive emotional state, but as a dialectical reality, rooted in the goodness of creation, distorted by the fall, paradoxically restored amidst suffering through Christ's redemption, and ultimately fulfilled in the Kingdom of God. Based on this theological framework, the study employs a methodology of “theologically-driven integration,” adopting and theologically reconstructing key insights such as empathic listening from Carl Rogers, selfobject needs from Heinz Kohut, and narrative re-authoring from narrative therapy. These theories offer crucial psychological insights into the process of restoring joy, as they sensitively address the human journey of relational longing and the search for meaning. The core contribution of this research is to establish the “Mediator of Joy” model for pastoral counselors. The term ‘mediator’ is deliberately chosen to emphasize that the counselor is not the source or creator of joy. This model complements Angella Son’s “Agents of Joy” by emphasizing a theological humility that acknowledges God’s sovereignty over joy—rather than human effort or technique—and a relational stance of journeying with the client. Furthermore, the study proposes a three-stage counseling model consisting of ‘Creating a Safe Space for Lament,’ ‘Invitation to the Redemptive-Historical Narrative,’ and ‘Internalization of Joy.’ This process integrates insights from neuroscience and positive psychology to enhance the model’s theological validity and psychological effectiveness. In conclusion, this study reframes joy as a core resource for pastoral care and counseling and contributes to broadening its horizons by providing a theological integration model that moves beyond traditional approaches to support the client's holistic flourishing life.
