본 고는 ‘작은 에쓰노그라퍼’(mini-ethnographer)로서 목회자와 목회 경청과 관찰의 중요성과 에쓰노그라픽 목회 경청과 실천 방안을 제시하는 데 연구 목적이 있다. 에 쓰노그라피(ethnography)는 사회 문화적 상황 속에서 인간의 삶을 연구하는 방법의 한 유형이다. 에쓰노그라피는 주로 참여 관찰 방법을 사용한다. 에쓰노그라피 연구자 는 집단생활과 사회적 상호 작용을 관찰하고 체험하기 위하여 사람들의 삶의 현장에 직접 참여하는 것을 중요하게 여긴다. 인종학의 과제가 특정 집단의 이야기를 발견하 는 것을 중요하게 여기듯이, 목회자도 목회 돌봄의 대상과 집단의 이야기를 발견하는 것을 중요하게 여겨야 한다. 목회자는 돌봄의 대상과 집단의 이야기를 발견하기 위해 경청과 관찰을 중요하게 여기며 실천해야 한다. 목회자는 목회 현장에서 성도들과 관 계에서 부딪치는 돌봄의 문제들은 공동체의 상황에 따라 그리고 주어지는 다양한 상 황에서 끊임없이 질문하고 경청하며 관찰하며 가능한 것들을 실천해야 한다. 특히 상 처와 정서적 역류가 흐르는 공동체의 목회자는 성도들의 갈망과 상처를 먼저 경청하 며 관찰하는 것이 중요하다. 목회자는 공동체의 상황적 관찰 없이 무조건 성경과 교리만을 가르치려고 하면 안 된다. 목회자는 성도들에게 성경과 교리를 가르치려고 하 기 전에 사람 자체를 귀하게 여기고 먼저 그들의 갈망과 상처를 경청하려는 자세가 있어야 한다. 목회자는 단지 교리를 논하며, 그것만을 품고 살아서는 안 된다. 목회자 는 사람들이 살아가는 문화와 상황 연구를 부차적인 것으로 여겨서는 안 된다. 목회 자는 기독교 전통의 토대를 밝혀주는 역사적 텍스트뿐 아니라 인간의 경험, 즉 살아 있는 인간 문서도 그 자체로 가치가 있으며, 중요한 해석의 대상임을 알아야 한다. 목 회자가 신학적 지식이 탁월해도 돌보는 사람, 즉 인간 문서를 모르게 되면, 그 지식은 적실성 있게 작용할 수 없다. 목회자는 만나는 사람마다 뭔가를 두려워하고 뭔가를 갈망하고 뭔가를 상실하며 살아가는 사람임을 잊어서는 안 된다. 목회자는 복음을 교 인들의 고달프고 힘든 삶에 접목함으로써 복음의 가르침을 보전해야 한다. 목회자는 많은 사람들이 들을 귀를 찾고 있다는 것을 잊어서는 안 된다. 목회자의 입술보다는 귀를 원하는 시대가 되었다. 목회자에게 사람들과 공동체는 현란한 말보다는 에쓰노 그라픽 경청을 원하는 시대이다. 이 시대에 목회자가 사람들과 공동체의 상황을 경청 하며 관찰하는 것은 부차적인 요소가 아니라 목회 돌봄에서 필수적인 요소다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the importance of pastoral listening and observation, as a "mini-ethnographer," and to suggest ways to practice ethnographic pastoral listening. Ethnography is a method for studying human life within a sociocultural context. Ethnography primarily uses participant observation methods. Ethnography researchers value direct participation in people's lives to observe and experience group life and social interaction. Just as the task of ethnology is to discover the stories of specific groups, so too should pastors consider it important to discover the stories of the objects and groups of their pastoral care. Pastors must value and practise listening and observation to discover the stories of the people and groups they care for. Pastors must constantly ask questions, listen, observe and put into practice what they can in response to the issues of care they encounter in their relationships with the congregation in the pastoral field, depending on the circumstances of the community and the various situations presented. Especially for pastors in communities where wounds and emotional backlash flow, it is important to first listen to and observe the longings and wounds of the congregation. Pastors should not blindly teach only the Bible and doctrines without observing the context of the community. Before pastors attempt to teach the Bible and doctrine to their congregation, they must value people themselves and be willing to listen to their longings and wounds. Pastors should not simply discuss doctrines and live by them. Pastors should not consider the study of the culture and circumstances in which people live as secondary. Pastors must recognize that not only historical texts that illuminate the foundations of the Christian tradition, but also human experience—that is, living human documents—are valuable in their own right and are subject to important interpretation. Even if a pastor has excellent theological knowledge, if he does not know the people he cares for, that is, the human text, that knowledge cannot be put to effective use. Pastors must not forget that everyone they meet is a person who lives with something to fear, something to long for, and something to lose. Pastors must preserve the teachings of the gospel by grafting it onto the difficult and challenging lives of their congregation. Pastors must not forget that many people are seeking ears to listen. We live in an age where people want ears, not just the pastor's lips. For pastors, this is an era where people and communities want to listen to ethnography rather than flashy words. In this day and age, it is not a secondary element for pastors to listen to and observe the situations of people and communities, but an essential element of pastoral care.
