This cross-sectional study examined the patterns of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use among 140 Korean Christians aged 20 and older, using an online survey. The study found remarkably high levels of CAM use (91.4%), and faith duration was the largest predictor of CAM use (OR=2.595, p=.001) as those with 20+ years of faith had CAM use of 96.9% compared to lesser amounts in newer believers. Christian leaders often served as counselors (49.3%) in health decision-making and sometimes as supporters (40.7%). Two-step cluster analysis demonstrated that participants had different groups based on faith perceptions, which in the case of a positive influence of faith led to 100% CAM use levels. Based on the study results, researchers suggest that mature Christian faith supports CAM healing choices, rather than inhibits alternative healing choices, and that a continued need for faith-informed healthcare is justified.

본 횡단면 연구는 20세 이상 한국 기독교인 140명을 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 통해 보완대체의학(CAM) 사용 패 턴을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, CAM 사용률이 매우 높았으며(91.4%), 신앙 기간이 CAM 사용의 가장 큰 예측 요인이었다 (OR=2.595, p=.001). 20년 이상 신앙을 가진 사람들의 CAM 사용률은 96.9%로, 신규 신자들의 낮은 CAM 사용률보다 높았 다. 기독교 지도자들은 건강 관련 의사결정에서 상담자(49.3%)와 지지자(40.7%) 역할을 하는 경우가 많았으며, 2단계 군집 분석 결과, 신앙에 대한 인식에 따라 참가자들의 집단이 달랐고, 신앙이 긍정적인 영향을 미친 경우 CAM 사용률이 100%에 달했다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 성숙한 기독교 신앙은 대체의학 선택을 억제하기보다는 오히려 CAM 치유 선택을 지지하는 것 으로 보이며 이러한 결과는 신앙에 기반한 건강관리의 지속적인 필요성을 시사한다.
