Manufacturing Techniques for Lacquered Tea Cabinet(Giguk) with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Made during the Japanese Occupation Period

한국어: 일제강점기에 제작된 나전칠 기국(器局)을 대상으로, 과학적 분석을 통해 구조 및 재료, 제작기법 등을 확인하고자 하였다. X-ray 촬영을 포함한 구조 분석을 통해 전통 짜맞춤 기법 외에 양못(洋釘) 접합과 부목 구조가 사용되었음을 확인하였다. 수종 분석 결과 피나무속의 목재가 기국의 백골로 사용되었다. 자개로는 진주패와 청패가 사용되었으며, 나전기법은 줄음 질과 끊음질을 중심으로 적용되었으며 세부 표현을 위해 모조법이 병용되었다. 칠 도막은 3층 구조로 구성되었고, 바탕칠층은 위치에 따라 토분⋅옻칠 또는 토분⋅호분⋅옻칠의 배합으로 사용되었다. 즉, 이 기국은 전통적인 제작기법과 근대적 요소가 절충되어 제작된 칠 공예품이다. 따라서 본 연구 결과는 근대기 나전칠기 유물의 보존⋅복원 기술 수립에 중요한 기초 자료 로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

영어: This study investigates technical variations in the production of najeonchil giguks (lacquerware tea cabinets) made during the period of Japanese occupation by conducting scientific analyses of their structure, manufacturing techniques, and composition of materials. Structural analysis perform ed u sing X -ray imaging revealed t he use of Western-style nails and a uxiliary wooden reinforcements, in addition to traditional joinery techniques. Wood species analysis revealed that Tiliaspp. wood was used for the frame of the lacquerware. The inlays include both mother-of-pearl and an abalone green lip shell. The m ain decorative techniques were jureumjil (filing) and kkeuneumjil (cutting), supplemented by mojobeop (carve lines techniques) for detailed expressions. The lacquer layers h ad a three-layer structure, with the base layer made of either clay and lacquer or a combination of clay, calcium carbonate, and lacquer, depending on the location. In other words, agiguk is a lacquerware craft item created by blending traditional production techniques with modern elements. The results of this study form important foundational data for the establishment of preservation and restoration techniques for modern-period najeonchil lacquerware artifacts.
