본고는 ‘불한당’의 어원과 그 형태 및 의미 변화에 주목한 것이다. ‘불한당’은 17세 기 문헌에 ‘블한당’으로 나오며, [[블+한(漢)]+당(黨)]으로 분석된다. ‘블’은 ‘火’, ‘한 (漢)’은 ‘놈’, ‘당(黨)’은 ‘무리’의 뜻이어서 ‘블한당’은 ‘횃불을 들어 불을 밝힌 채 부호 가(富豪家)의 재물을 강탈하는 도적 무리’로 해석된다. ‘블한당’은 ‘불한당’으로 변한 다. 그리고 ‘불한당’은 ‘불항당’으로 변하기도 하고, ‘부란당’을 거쳐 ‘부랑당’으로 변 하기도 한다. 그리고 ‘불’이 절단(切斷)되어 ‘한당’으로 축약되기도 한다. ‘불한당’은 그 본래의 의미에서 ‘남의 재물을 강탈하는 짓을 일삼는 무리’라는 의미로 변하고, 이 러한 의미에서 다시 ‘행패를 부리며 못된 짓을 일삼는 무리’라는 의미로 변한다. 그리 고 ‘예의와 염치가 없는 막된 무리’라는 의미로도 변한다.

This paper considers the etymology of the word ‘불한당’(a rogue) and its changes in form and meaning. In the 17th century literature, ‘블한당’ was used to write ‘불한당’(a rogue), and the word ‘블한당’ is the combination of [[블+한 (漢)]+당(黨)]. Here, ‘블’(火) means ‘fire,’ ‘한(漢)’ is ‘놈’(a guy), and ‘당(黨)’ means ‘무리’(a group). In the beginning, the word ‘블한당’ was used to call a gang of bandits who robs the rich people, holding a torchlight. Then, the word ‘불한당’ changed into ‘불항당’, and ‘부란당’ became ‘부랑당’ in the word form. The word ‘불’(fire) was sometimes separated, that only ‘한당’ was used to call them. With the course of time, the word ‘불한당’ has got the meaning of a group of people who habitually rob the property of others. Then, the word is used to call people who use violence and habitually behave badly to others. And now the word means a deceitful and unreliable scoundrel who are impudent and impolite.
