본 연구는 식민지 조선에서 희석식소주가 어떻게 정착하였는지, 그리고 그 형성 과정이 오늘날 희석식소주에 대한 인식 구조에 어떤 영향을 주었는지를 규명하고자 시도하였다. 기존 연구가 희석식소주를 식민지 수탈의 결과물로만 규정한 데 비해, 본고는 조선총독부의 주조업 ‘집약정책’, 조선인의 기호 변화, 주조업계의 대응 등이 복합적으로 작용한 결과로 파악하였다. 희석식소주는 기존 전통주와의 혼화를 거치 며 소비자에게 점진적으로 수용되었고, 이는 산업화와 실용주의, 문화적 적응이 교 차한 양상이었다. 본 연구는 식민지기의 형성 맥락이 희석식소주가 ‘비전통적’ 술로 간주되는 현대의 인식 구조에 영향을 주었음을 지적하며, 희석식소주를 보다 입체적 으로 이해할 필요성을 제안한다.

This paper seeks to examine how diluted soju was established in colonial Korea and to consider how its formation may have shaped contemporary perceptions of its cultural status. While previous studies have often framed diluted soju as a mere byproduct of Japanese colonial exploitation, this paper argues that its emergence resulted from the complex interplay of the Government–General’s liquor industry concentration policy, shifting consumer preferences, and responses from Korean brewers. Diluted soju was gradually accepted through the blending with traditional grain–based liquors, reflecting a dynamic shaped by industrialization, practicality, and cultural adaptation. This study suggests that the historical context of diluted soju’s formation contributed to the perception of it as “non–traditional” in contemporary Korean society, and calls for a more nuanced understanding of its cultural and historical significance.
