중일전쟁 이후의 언론통제 속에서 내각정보부는 국민들에 대해 전의를 고양하고 정부의 정책을 선전하기 위해 『사진주보』를 발간했다. 일본 국내 생활상과 전황에 대한 상세한 보도와 더불어 만주국, 중국의 괴뢰정권 및 동남아시아 점령지에 관한 기사를 실었다. 이에 비해 식민지에 관한 기사는 상대적으로 적었고, 본문보다 독자 사진 등에서 소개되는 경우가 많았다. 『사진주보』의 표지사진으로는 타이완이 1회, 조선이 3회 등장하여 사실상 동남아시아 각지보다도 현격하게 비중이 적었다. 내용면에서는 타이완의 경우 고사족 지도자, 조선에 경우에는 한복과 지게를 통해 식민지의 상징적 이미지를 활용하려 하였다. 일본의 전황이 급박해지면서 식민지 청년들에게도 지원병제도와 징병제가 실시되었는데, 『사진주보』는 식민지 민중들이 일본인과 마찬가지 권리를 얻은 기쁨에 감격하는 내용으로 보도했다. 아시아태평양전쟁 개전으로 필리핀에 근접한 타이완은 군사적 중요성이 더욱 커졌고, 정규군 이외에도 타이완 청년들이 전쟁지역으로 파견되었다는 기사가 증가했다. 이에 비해 후방인 조선은 식량 및 자원 조달지로서의 역할이 강조되었다. 전시 총동원체제 아래 식민지에도 인적, 물적 동원이 이루어졌지만, 『사진주보』보도에서는 일본이 식민지 타이완과 조선에 대해 무엇을 중시했는지가 조금 다르게 나타났다.

In the wake of media control after the Sino–Japanese War, Naikakujouhoubu published the Shashinsyuhou to raise public opinion and propagandise the government's policies. In addition to detailed reports on domestic life and the war situation in Japan, the magazine also published articles on Manchukuo, Nanjing regime, and occupied territories in Southeast Asia. In comparison, there were relatively few articles about the colonies, and they were often illustrated with reader photographs rather than text. On the covers of Shashinsyuhou, Taiwan appeared only once and Colonial Chosen three times, , giving them significantly less prominence than various regions of Southeast Asia. In terms of content, the publication attempted to employ symbolic images of the colonies, featuring tribal leaders from Taiwan and, in the case of Korea, images of traditional Hanbok and Jige. As Japan’s war situation became more urgent, both the volunteer system and conscription were implemented for colonial youths, and Shashinsyuhou reported in an emotional tone about how colonial people were moved by the joy of gaining the same rights as Japanese. With the outbreak of the Asia-Pacific War, Taiwan’s military significance increased due to its proximity to the Philippines, and there was a growing number of articles about young Taiwanese being dispatched to war zones in addition to the regular army. In contrast, Korea, as a rear area, was increasingly portrayed as a source of food and resources.
