‘요나오시(よなおし)’는 한국어로 ‘세계의 변혁’ 또는 ‘세상 고치기’ 등으로 번역을 해온 용어로, 현대 대중미디어에서도 자주 볼 수 있으며 근대 역사학과 민속학, 종교학 등의 분야에서는 학자들이 다양한 의미를 부여하여 학술용어로 사용하기도 하였고, 한편으로는 근세 일본에서 실제로 사용한 역사 용어이기도 하다. 이처럼 폭넓게 사용해 온 용어이지만 이에 대한 총체적인 고찰은 여전히 미흡하다고 할 수 있는데, 본고에서는 이 용어의 전체상을 이해하기 위해 여러 학문분야의 역사적 배경을 고려한 요나오시론의 계보를 작성하고 에도시대 당대의 용어로서의 ‘요나오시’의 범위를 살펴본다. 그리고 이 용어가 실제 등장하기 시작한 에도시대 초기에는 어떤 의미로 사용되었는지도 살펴본다. 특히 ‘요나오시’의 첫 용례라고도 할 수 있는 에도시대의 지진재해와 관련된 용례를 통해 이후 ‘요나오시’라는 용어와 요나오시론을 둘러싼 학문사적 계보를 이해할 수 있는 단초를 제공하고자 한다. 에도초 지진재해를 막기 위한 주문, 또는 지진 자체를 의미하는 ‘요나오시’라는 문구는 이후 잇키 속에서 ‘요나오시 대명신’으로, 그리고 1855년 지진재해 이후 등장하는 나마즈에라는 그림의 문구로도 등장한다. ‘요나오시’ 라는 용어의 총체적 이해를 위해서는 재해 속에서 등장하는 역사용어로서의 ‘요나오시’의 의미 이해와 함께 근현대 학술용어와 일상용어로서의 의미까지도 포함해서 포괄적으로 분석할 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 이후 그러한 분석을 위해 ‘요나오시’의 계보를 정리하며 이 용어가 처음으로 등장한 시기의 의미를 살펴보는 것에 의의가 있다.

The term “Yonaoshi” is frequently encountered in contemporary mass media. In modern fields such as history, folklore, and religious studies, scholars have ascribed various meanings to this term and utilized it as an academic term. Moreover, it is a historical term that was also used in early modern Japan. Despite its broad application, a comprehensive examination of this term remains insufficient. To fully understand its overall significance, a deep understanding of the historical backgrounds of multiple academic disciplines, as well as an exploration of the terminology used during the Edo period, is necessary. This paper aims to undertake a preliminary work to comprehensively understand the term “Yonaoshi” by organizing its academic genealogy and investigating the meanings it held when it first began to be used in the early Edo period. In particular, by examining the earliest examples of “Yonaoshi” related to earthquake disasters in the Edo period, this study seeks to clarify what the term meant at that time, thus providing insights into the subsequent academic genealogy surrounding “Yonaoshi.” “Yonaoshi,” which means either a spell to prevent earthquake disasters or the earthquake itself, later appeared in the context of uprisings as “Yonaoshi Daimyōjin,” and also in the inscriptions of namazu-e that emerged after the 1855 earthquake disaster. For a comprehensive understanding of the term “Yonaoshi,” it is essential to analyze its historical meaning alongside its significance as an academic term in modern and contemporary contexts. This research is significant in that it organizes the genealogy of “Yonaoshi” and examines the meanings of this term from its earliest occurrences.
