본고는 출가한 황족 및 귀족의 자제가 주직으로서 거주하는 특별한 종교적 권위 를 지닌 문적사원이라는 일본 고유의 사원의 번영과 소멸에 이르는 역사적 노정을 세속권력과의 관계를 중심으로 정리한 통시적 고찰이다. 문적사원은 고대 후기 등장 한 이래 각 종파의 사원을 통괄하는 위치에서 세속권력에 영합하거나 때로는 세속권 력과 길항하는 독자적인 사회 세력으로서 영향력을 발휘하며 오랜 기간 존속해 왔 다. 특히 도쿠가와 막부가 각 신분 내의 위계질서를 엄격하며 세밀하게 구분함에 따라 세속권력이 규정한 사원 질서의 최정상에 선 사원으로서 문적사원이 가지는 위치는 보다 견고해졌다. 문적사원은 전통적인 조정 권위의 분신이자 신생의 무사정 권의 정통성을 보장하는 존재로서 권력의 특별한 보호와 통제를 받았다. 하지만 19 세기 후반의 정치적 혼란기 속 출가한 문적이 대거 환속하게 됨에 따라 이는 최종적 으로 메이지 정부에 의한 문적 폐지라는 결말로 이어졌다. 문적사원은 세속권력과 깊이 연결되어 있었기에, 바로 그러한 이유로 정치적 변동기에 급격한 변화를 겪게 되었으며 결국 근대에 이르러 사실상의 ‘소멸’을 맞이하게 된 것이다.

This paper is a diachronic consideration of the process of the prosperity and extinction of Japanese temples, called dynastic temples, with special religious authority in which the children of royal families and aristocrats reside as monks. Since its appearance in the late ancient times, this temple has existed for a long time, exerting influence as an independent social force that sometimes opposes power in its position to control the temples. As the Tokugawa Shogunate strictly and precisely distinguished the hierarchy within each status, the position of the dynastic temple as a temple at the top of the temple order became more solid. The dynastic temple was specially protected and controlled by the shogunate as an alter ego of the traditional court authority and a being who guaranteed the legitimacy of the samurai regime. However, in the context of internal and external crises in the late 19th century, a large number of monks returned, which eventually led to the ‘abolition’ of the temple. The dynastic temple was deeply connected to political power, so for that reason, it underwent rapid changes during the political turmoil and actually faced ‘extinction’.
