미나마타병은, 인간의 이기(利己), 문명의 이기(利器)로부터 비롯된 오염이 인간에게 직접적인 위해로 돌아옴을 확인하게 된 첫 공식 사례라는 점에서 ‘공해의 원점’이라 불리기도 한다. 그런 만큼 의학, 사회학, 경제학, 법학 등 다방면에 미나마타병을 둘러싼 무수한 논의가 존재한다. 아직 제대로 논의되지 못하거나 채 알려지지 못한 미나마타병 관련 서사 및 그 밖의 일본 환경재난 서사물들이 산적해 있는 가운데, 본고는 2020년 공개된 할리우드 영화 『미나마타』에 주목했다. 영화 『미나마타』에서 미나마타, 미나마타병이 어떻게 표상되었는지 살펴보았다. 영화에서 미나마타는 특종을 찾는 이들의 흥미를 자극하는 취재 대상이자 피 사체인 것으로 묘사된다. 또한 미나마타는 미나마타병 환자와 가족들이 머무는 공간인 동시에 짓소라는 거대악과의 투쟁이 벌어지는 장소로 표상된다.

Minamata disease is also called the ‘origin of pollution' in that it is the first official case to confirm that pollution originating from human selfishness and civilized selfishness returns to direct harm to humans. As such, there are countless discussions surrounding Minamata disease in various fields such as medicine, sociology, economics, and law. Amid a pile of narratives related to Minamata disease and other Japanese environmental disaster narratives that have not yet been properly discussed or are unknown, this paper paid attention to the Hollywood film Minamata released in 2020. We looked at how Minamata and Minamata disease were represented in the film “Minamata”. In the film, Minamata is portrayed as a subject and a covering that stimulates the interest of those looking for the scoop. Minamata is also represented as a place where Minamata disease patients and their families stay, and at the same time as a place where the struggle against the great evil of construction takes place.
