Gender Issues in Maritime Discourse : A Corpus Linguistic Analysis in Maritime Web News

In the traditionally male-dominated maritime industry, it is important to improve gender representation in line with the International Maritime Organization's commitment to SDG 5 on gender equality. In this study, we use corpus-based analysis to examine gender-biased and gender-inclusive language by comparing a corpus of maritime web news(MWN) to a corpus of general English news on the web(NOW). Our findings show that while inclusive terms such as "seafarer" are increasing in use, terminology inclusive to women remains underrepresented, although when used it is more often associated with leadership roles. Traditional male pronouns still dominate, emphasizing the ongoing challenges of achieving linguistic gender parity. We suggest the need for policy changes, targeted training and continued efforts to promote gender-inclusive language and true gender parity in the maritime industry.
