이 논문은 <合字解>의 내용을 중심으로 ‘合字’의 개념과 범위를 다시 논의하고, <合字解>에 제시된 내용의 통일성, 즉 그 내용의 적절성과 타당성에 대해 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기본적으로 ‘合字’는 음절을 바탕으로 한 고유어 표기법을 전제로 한다. 그리고 초 성자, 중성자, 종성자의 결합을 통한 음절 표기뿐만 아니라 중세 국어의 특성상 음절 을 정확하게 표기하기 위해서 성조를 나타내는 방점의 표기 역시 ‘合字’의 개념에 포 함되어야 한다. 또한 <合字解>에서 제시한 특별한 자모 관련 언급 내용은 고유어 표 기와 관련된 특수한 상황을 고려한 것으로 <合字解>의 내용적 통일성에서 벗어나지 않는다.

The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the concept and scope of ‘Hapja’ with a focus on the content of and evaluate consistency, appropriateness, that is the coherence of the presented content in . Basically, the concept of ‘Hapja’ presupposes the notation for Korean native word based on syllables. In addition to representing syllables through the combination of initial, medial, and final letters, the concept of ‘Hapja’ should also encompass the notation of the Bangjum(side dot), which are necessary for accurately representing syllables because the existence of tone is the characteristics of Middle Korean. Furthermore, the special mention of specific letters in considers special situations related to native Korean notation and does not deviate from the coherence of the content in .
