10여 년 전부터 더치 디자인(Dutch Design)이라는 이름으로 네덜란드 그래픽디자인이 한국의 그래픽디 자이너들에게 주목받아왔고, 현재는 그래픽디자인의 일반적 특성으로 자리 잡고 있다. 본 연구는 네덜란드 그래픽 디자인의 특징을 크게 ‘비판적 실험', ‘개념과 구조의 탐구’라는 점으로 파악하였다. 그리고 이 두 개의 시각으로 네덜란드 그래픽디자인의 표현 특성을 ‘중첩과 분절의 유희'로 해석하였다. 그래픽디자인의 표현에 있어서 중첩은 공간과 시간을 내포하며, 공간과 시간의 중첩은 2차적 의미를 파생시켜 다의적 해석을 가능하게 한다. 그래픽디자 인은 여러 분절된 단위소로 이뤄져 있으며 이들은 결속을 통해서 완성된 메시지를 전달한다. 본 연구는 더치 디자 인의 특성이 한때 유행하는 스타일이기보다는 시각적 표현과 의미 발현 원리에 따라 작동하고 있음을 증명한다.

Dutch graphic design has been attracting attention from Korean graphic designers for more than 10 years under the name of Dutch Design, and now it is becoming a general characteristic of graphic design. This study has identified the characteristics of Dutch graphic design as ‘critical experiment’ and ‘exploration of concept and structure’. And with these two perspectives, the expression characteristics of Dutch graphic design were interpreted as ‘play of superimposition, and segmentation’. In the expression of graphic design, overlapping implies space and time, and superimposition of space and time derives a secondary meaning, enabling the polysemous interpretation. Graphic design consists of several segmented units, which convey the completed message through solidarity. This study proves that the characteristics of Dutch design operate according to the principle of visual expression and meaning expression rather than the once popular style.
