Digital transformation (DT) is having significant impacts on organizations, industries, and society. Many studies assume that organizations already possess the necessary resources for successful DT, such as human, technological, and financial resources. However, some organizations may not want to incur the costs of owning these resources and may prefer to access them in a temporary and dynamic arrangement. Through the example of a not-for-profit organization in New Zealand, this research demonstrates that successful DT requires the use of flowing communication and resources in three distinct phases. This paper proposes three phases that organizations can use to leverage accessible resources, which they do not necessarily own, to achieve successful DT.
