(원)삼국시대 강릉 초당동 유적군에는 사구 지대를 중심으로 초당동, 강문동, 송정동 취 락이 포함된다. 취락은 대체로 초당동(원삼국시대) → 강문동(병행기) → 송정동(신라)의 순으로 중심지가 이동한다. 원삼국시대 초당동 유적군의 취락 중심지에는 신라의 진출과 더불어 고분군이 조영되면서 구질서가 재편된다. (원)삼국시대 초당동 유적군은 공통적으로 출토되는 중도식무문토기와 새롭게 추가되는 물질자료의 계통 차이, 주거의 구조 및 노시설의 변화에 따라 크게 3단계(5분기)로 세분된다. 초당동 Ⅰ-1단계(AD 2C)에는 후벽이 직선인 여·철자형주거, 무시설식로, 중도식무문토 기와 더불어 낙랑계토기가 다수 확인된다. 초당동 Ⅰ-2단계(AD 3C)에는 주거와 노시설은 앞 시기와 동일하지만 중도유형권의 물질자료가 새롭게 결합되면서 낙랑계토기의 수량이 급감한다. 초당동 Ⅱ-1단계(AD 4C 전엽 ∼ 중엽)에는 후벽 중앙이 약간 돌출한 여·철자형주거, 점토띠식로, 신라 조기양식토기 및 호남지역 토기, 일본의 土師器가 확인된다. 초당동 Ⅱ -2단계(AD 4C 후엽 ∼ 5C 전반)에는 후벽이 둔각으로 꺾인 여·철자형주거, 점토띠식로, 신라토기 등이 확인된다. 초당동 Ⅲ단계(AD 5C 후반 ∼ 6C)에는 신라의 방형주거와 다수의 신라토기가 확인된 다. 신라의 방형주거는 마한지역에서 영남 북부지역을 경유하는 과정에서 4주식이 탈락하 고, 많은 수의 주공이 결합하면서 초당동 유적군에 최종 유입된 것으로 보인다. 한편, 초당 동 유적군의 여·철자형주거 및 중도식무문토기는 6C 전후까지도 소수 잔존한다.

During the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period to Three Kingdoms Period, settlements such as Chodang-dong, Gangmun-dong, and Songjeong-dong were located on the coastal sand dune in Chodang-dong, Gangneung. Generally, the center of settlements shifted from Chodang-dong to Gangmun-dong, and then to Songjeong-dong. During the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, with the creation of Silla's tombs in the center of Chodang-dong, the appearance of settlements began to change. During the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period to Three Kingdoms Period, Chodang-dong can be divided into five phases based on changes in pottery styles and dwelling structures. In the first phase of Chodang-dong(2nd century AD), many Lelang-type Pottery and 吕·凸-shaped dwellings with straight back walls were discovered. In the second phase of Chodang-dong(3rd century AD), the shape of dwellings remained the same as in the previous phase. But, compared to the first stage, the quantity of Lelang-type Pottery rapidly reduced, and new materials of Joongdo Assemblage were added. In the third phase of Chodang-dong(301∼366 AD), 吕·凸-shaped dwellings with a center of the back wall was slightly protruding were discovered along with Incipient Silla Style Pottery, pottery from the Honam and Japan. In the fourth phase of Chodang-dong(367 to 450 AD), 吕·凸-shaped dwellings with obtuse angle in the back wall, and Silla pottery were added. In the fifth phase of Chodang-dong(451 AD ∼ 6th century AD), Silla's square-shaped dwellings and many Silla pottery are added. Silla's square-shaped dwellings spread from the Mahan region to the northern region of Yeongnam and then to Chodang-dong.
