1939년 6월 29일 조선총독부는 등대사 경성지부 교인들을 신사참배거부 및 불경행위를 저질렀다는 죄목으로 긴급 체포했다. 오늘날 여호와의 증인으로 통칭되는 등대사는 미국 파수대 협회의일본지부 명칭이다. 1930년대 이래로 조선에서도 그 세력을 확장한 신흥종교였다. 총독부는 일본의 등대사 교인들이 반전사상을 주장하는 것을 인지하고, 그러한 운동이 조선에 전파되는 것을 경계했다. 등대사는 다른 교파에 비해 신도 수가 적고, 그 운용 방식도 폐쇄적이었다. 그럼에도 신도들간의 강한 결속력을 가지고 있었고, 강한 재림신앙을 가지고 있었다. 이에 총독부는 신도들을체포하는 동시에 그들의 교리 및 운동 방식에 대해 분석했고, 나름의 처벌 논리를 생산 후 판결에반영했다. 이 사건을 통해 일제의 천황통치와 충돌한 재림신앙의 의의를 파악하고자 한다.

On June 29, 1939 The Japanese Government-General of Korea arrested members of the Gyeongseong branch of the Deungdaesa(Jehovah's witnesses). In the 1930s, Deungdaesa is expanded its power in Joseon. The Japanese Government-General of Korea was wary of spreading anti-war ideas among Japanese branch of the Deungdaesa. Deungdaesa had a small number of members, but he had a strong bond. And they had a s trong coming of Jesus. In response, the Japanese Government-General of Korea analyzed the faith and doctrine of Deungdaesa. They tried to find content that defied the Japanese emperor. To this end, the Governor-General branded the Gyeongseong branch of the Deungdaesa as a terrorist organization attempting to overthrow society. Through this incident, we can see how the Governor-General suppressed religious doctrines for the rule of the Emperor.
