본고는 동경지학협회(이하 지학협회)의 「연회기사」와 『동경지학협회보고』(이하 협회보고)에 기초해 19세기 말 지학협회의 해외 학술 교류를 살펴본다. 1880년대 전반 지학협회는 해외 단체와 적극적으로 교류를 전개하고, 이후 교류가 안정화하 였다. 19세기 말 지학협회는 40여 개 해외 단체와 공식적으로 교류했으며, 그 대상은 주로 프랑스 및 독일을 비롯한 유럽과 아메리카의 지리학협회였다. 교류는 기 본적으로 각각 협회가 발행한 보고 및 도서를 교환하는 형식으로 이루어졌다. 실 제 협회2∼14년(1880∼93) 해외 단체가 기부한 도서는 총 657종 3,400여 권에 이르 렀다. 해외 단체와의 교류는 지학협회가 지리 지식을 확충하는 데 주요한 축이었 다. 특히 서구 제국이 식민과 지배를 확장하는 상황과 연동해, 지학협회는 유럽 및 아메리카 제국의 단체와 교류하며 직･간접적으로 지리 지식을 축적하고 지리적 관 심과 시야를 확대하였다. 그것은 열강의 식민 및 지배 이데올로기를 이해하는 과 정이기도 했다. 19세기 말 지학협회와 서구 지리학협회 간 교류에 세 가지 특징이 나타난다. 첫 째, 교류는 세계정세와 긴밀히 연관해 전개되었다. 둘째, 교류는 국제 네트워크를 형성하며 확장되었다. 셋째, 지학협회는 프랑스 지리학협회와 활발히 교류했다. 지 학협회는 창립 과정에서 영국 왕립지리학협회를 모범으로 하지만, 실제 프랑스 각 지의 지리학협회와 활발히 교류했다.

This paper examines the relationship between the Tokyo Geographic Society and Western associations in the late 19th century, based on ‘annual meeting article’ and ‘journal of the Tokyo Geographic Society’. In the first half of the 1880s, the Tokyo Geographic Society actively engaged in exchanges with Western associations, and later the exchanges stabilized. At the end of the 19th century, the Tokyo Geographic Society officially interacted with more than 40 Western associations. Exchange was basically conducted in the form of exchanging reports and books issued by the association. In fact, more than 3,400 books were donated by 1880􋺫1893 overseas associations. Interaction with Western associations was a major pillar of the Tokyo Geographic Society's expansion of geographic knowledge. In particular, as the Western Empire expanded its colonization and control, the Geographical Association interacted with the European and American Geographic Associations, accumulating geographic knowledge directly and indirectly and expanding geographical interest and vision. At the end of the 19th century, three characteristics appeared in exchanges between the Tokyo Geographic Society and western geographic societies. First, it was developed in close connection with the world situation. Second, it expanded by forming an international network. Third, it actively interacted with French geographical societies. The Tokyo Geographic Society modeled itself on The Royal Geographic Society, but in fact actively interacted with French geographical societies.
