본 연구는 이산문학으로서 제임스 스카츠 게일(James Scarth Gale)의 The Cloud Dream of the Nine을 고찰하였다. The Cloud Dream of the Nine 의 원작은 김만중의 한문소설인 『구운몽』이다. 이 작품이 영어로 번역되면서 영미 권에 정착하기 위해 탈원작이 되거나, 탈문화, 또는 정체성을 유지하거나 잃는 현상이 나타난다. 오늘날 디아스포라에서 재외한인의 내면세계의 갈등에서 볼 수 있는 현상의 편린을 고전문학의 작품이 번역되면서 나타날 수 있다. 따라서 외국인에 의해 외국어로 번역되는 한국문학 또한 이산문학의 범주에 포함되어야 한다 는 것이 본 논문의 취지이다. 또한 이것은 단순한 번역학, 번역문학의 문제가 아니 며 디아스포라와 이방문학으로 보고자 하였다. 그러나 이러한 연구자의 주장은 최근 디아스포라의 확장하는 현상에도 불구하고, 개념의 한계가 있다는 것을 절감 하였다. 제임스 게일은 『구운몽』에 삽입된 한시를 영역하면서 본래의 모습을 버리 고 영시의 형태로 변형시켜 타지인에게 수용하게 하였다.

This study examines James Scotts Gale's The Cloud Dream of the Nine as diaspora literature. The Cloud Dream of the Nine is based on the Korean novel in classical Chinese Goounmong(九雲夢) by Kim Man-jung. As this work is translated into English, there is a phenomenon of being de-original, de-cultural, or maintaining or losing identity in order to settle in the English-American region. In today's diaspora, the fragments of the phenomenon that can be seen in the conflicts in the inner world of Koreans living abroad can be revealed as the works of classical literature are translated. Therefore, Korean literature translated into foreign languages by foreigners should also be included in the category of discrete literature. This is not just a matter of translation studies and translation literature, but one of diaspora and foreign literature. James Gale threw away the original form of Korean poems in classical Chinese inserted in Goounmong, transformed them into English poems, and made them accepted by foreigners.
