Reporting of information security policy (ISP) violations are critical to taking the needed steps to protect organizational computing assets. Prior research has advocated for the establishment of whistleblowing channels to aid with early detection of ISP violations. Yet, it has been suggested that individuals show hesitancy in reporting wrongdoing at the workplace. To address this issue, this study proposes a theoretical model based on “mum effect” – tendency to remain silent about observed negative actions. The study will contribute to the literature on ISP compliance by reporting on the nuances regarding employees’ volition is communication.
