In line with a growing interest in Korea in the need to develop a translation competence accreditation system to be carried out on a national level, the author argues in this article the need to reach, among parties concerned, an agreement on a conceptual and operational definition of translation competence. A summary of Pym's and Chesterman's frameworks are presented to be followed by a discussion of Brunette's proposal before a version of her model modified by the author to better suit the Korean context is presented.
