Newspaper cartoons can be said to play a crucial role in the media's function of social criticism. They criticize society indirectly and satirically, through such strategies as quotation, allusion, and parody: a semiosis that most vividly characterizes intertextuality. In the domain of intertextuality, emphasis is put on an interaction between a reader and a text. In other words, a reader decodes a text, using inferences based on prior texts, cultural experiences, social conventions, myths, and so forth. Therefore, a translator has to tackle a problem of how to narrow the gap between two different cultures, and how to incorporate source language receptors into the membership of a target language culture. In this paper, retaining a cartoon's semiotic status such as satire, humor, and criticism is regarded as translation equivalence. Furthermore, this paper explores related strategies adopted in the Korean into Japanese translations of Nadaero Seonsaeng (Mr. Nadaero), an online version of The Dong-A Ilbo newspaper cartoon series.
