Haplology, or avoidance of homophonous elements, is a well- known phenomenon found in a variety of languages. Yip (1998) suggests that this type of identity avoidance is fundamentally phonological in nature. The claim is that such a phenomenon can be explained by means of a family of OCP constraints (cf. Myers 1993). However, this constraint appears to be part of a general cognitive pattern, as argued by Pierrehumbert (1993), which in turn suggests the possibility of adopting a more general constraint. In this lecture we start out by reviewing Yip's proposal from this angle. And then we will see other notable cases of the OCP effects in English morphology
