중국 譜學史에서 『풍속통의』 성씨편은 春秋戰國 시기와 漢代의 보학을 집대성한 것으로 평가받고 있다. 동한 대 응소에 의해 편찬된 『풍속통의』 성씨편은 이후 서진 시기와 남북조 시기 그리고 당대의 보학에 많은 영향을 주었다. 『풍속통의』 성씨편은 수·당대까지 중국 사회에 전해졌던 것으로 보이지만, 송대에 이르러서는 『풍속통의』 안에서 사라지게 되었다. 그래서 청대 고증학자들은 『풍속통의』 성씨편을 복원하기 위해 노력하였고 이러한 노력은 여러 문헌에 흩어져 있는 성씨편을 집일하는 방식으로 나타났다. 청대 고증학자들이 『풍속통의』 성씨편을 복원하려 하였던 이유는 그들이 전개하였던 ‘한학 운동’과 관련이 있는 것으로 생각된다. 그들은 漢代에 편찬된 『풍속통의』 성씨편을 복원함으로서 보다 근원적인 중국의 모습에 다가갈 수 있다고 생각하였다.

According to Chinese historical records, Xingshipian of the Fengsutongyi is regarded as a collection of genealogical studies during the Warring States Period and the Han Dynasty. Xingshipian of the Fengsutongyi, compiled by Yingshao in the Donghan period, then influenced genealogical studies during the Xinjin, Nanbei, and Tang period. Xingshipian of the Fengsutongyi seems to have been existed until Sui and Tang dynasty, but was vanished in Chinese society in Song period. Philologists in Qing dynasty tried to restore the Xingshipian, and these efforts were made by collecting concerned contexts scattered throughout many historiography. The reason why Philologists in Qing dynasty tried to restore the is thought to be related to the "Han dynasty’ Classics Movement" in Qing society. They thought that they could approach to the origins of Confucianism through restoration of the Xingshipian.
