정보시스템 모형 및 이론의 개발은 정보기술 현상에 대한 연구자의 존재론적, 인식론적 관점에 기반한다. 본 논문은 정보기술 현상에 대한 관점을 물질론-이상론, 결정론-자유론의 차원에서 해석하고, 관점의 변경을 통해 어떻게 새로운 정보시스템 이론과 연구 모형을 도출할 수 있는지를 예시한다. 마지막으로 각 관점이 어떠한 기술 특징에서 잘 적용될 수 있는지를 제안한다.

Ontological and epistemological views of IT outcome provide the foundation for research model and theory building in Information Systems. In this opinion, I briefly explain such theoretical perspectives with two dimensions—materialism vs. idealism and determinism vs. voluntarism—and demonstrate how we can develop a new information systems theory by swinging our existing stand. I also discuss technological characteristics that may set the boundaries of our theoretical lens.
