이 논문의 목적은 빌 비올라의 작품에 나타난 시간성의 의미를 후설의 시간이론으로 분석하는 것이다. 비올라의 작품이 유발하는 시간경험의 세 가지 키워드를 느려짐, 지연, 예감으로 제시한 뒤, 나는 비올라의 <새천년의 다섯 천사>를 분석했다. 이 작품에서 ‘천사’는 예기치 않은 순간에 나타나 금방 사라질 뿐 아니라, 시야에 들어와 있는 동안에도 거의 형체를 알아볼 수 없다. 그래서 그들은 개체성을 가진 시간대상으로 구성되지 않는다. 시간대상의 구성이 계속 지연되는 가운데 생생한 현존의 감각이 발생하는 이 현상은 후설의 ‘예지’ 개념에 의해 설명될 수 있다. ‘곧 올 것에 대한 지각’의 의미를 갖는 예지는 근원현전, 파지와 함께 시간의 원초적 형식을 구성한다. <새천년의 다섯 천사>에서 예지는 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 천사의 출현에 대한 예감이 작품 감상 시간의 거의 전부를 차지하기 때문이다. <새천년의 다섯 천사>는 ‘비대상적 시간’을 보여주는 것이 아니라 대상을 미래의 시점에서 계속 견인하는 ‘선(先)대상적 시간’을 보여준다. 선대상적 시간은 대상적 시간(일상적 시간)의 논리적, 발생적 근원이므로, 이 작품의 시간은 ‘근원적 시간’으로 명명될 수 있다.

The purpose of this essay is to explore the meanings of temporality in Bill Viola’s works based on Edmund Husserl’s theory of time. Three keywords - slowness, delay, and hunch - are educed from the time-experience caused by Viola’s works and then applied to the analysis of his Five Angels for the Millennium. In this work, the “angels” appear at an unexpected moment, remain barely recognizable, and disappear instantaneously. They are not presented as a time-object with individuality. This phenomenon, in which a sense of vivid presence arises while the composition of the time-object is continuously delayed, can aptly be explained by Husserl’s concept of protention, which means “perceiving what is coming soon.” In Five Angels for the Millennium, protention plays a critical role as the hunch of the angels appearing dominates the whole experience of appreciating the work. Thus, this work abides by pre-objective time, which can be termed original time.
