본 연구는 신체활동 수업에 참여하는 여성 노인 시설 거주자(retirement home)에 대한 이해를 높이고자 설계 되었다. 본 연구는 질적연구이며, 미국 X주에 위치한 프리미엄 VV 시설 거주자 중 4명이 연구에 참여하였다. 본 연구는 6번의 이상의 참여관찰과 2번의 심층면담이 수행되었다. 이를 통해 걷기 수업 참가 의미에 대한 5가지 메인 테마가 도출 되었다. 첫 번째, 자부심과 관련된 참여의 의미로 본 연구에 참여한 한 참가자의 경우 ‘나는 54개국 이상을 방문해봤다’ 라는 문장을 통해 자부심을 나타내었다. 첫 번째 메인테마의 서브테마로 ‘나는 너의 멘토이다’가 중요한 의미로 나타났 다. 두 번째 메인테마는 외부 활동이다. 이를 ‘신선한 공기를 마신다’고 표현하였다. 세 번째 메인 테마는 타인과 상호작 용하는 기회이다. 특히 다양한 사람과 대화가 중요하다고 나타났다. 네 번째 메인 테마는 신체/건강과 관련된 이야기이 다. 마지막 테마는 지루하고 외로운 일상에서 벗어나고 싶다는 의지가 ‘어제와는 다른 오늘을 보내고 싶다’라는 표현을 통해 도출되었다.

The purpose of this study was to understand reasons why older women residents associated with physical activity class. This study employed qualitative inquiry including six participatory observations and two in-depth interviews. Among many older residents from VV retirement home in U.S, 4 individuals participated in this study. Five major themes emerged including meaning of participation in walking class. The first theme, the meaning of participation in walking class, was associated with proud; I have been to 54 different countries’. The sub-theme of the first was with respect to interaction with teacher; I am your tor-mentor. The second theme was regarding to Outside Activity; Because of people get fresh air. The third theme showed something related to Opportunity to interact with people; To talk to diverse people’. The fourth theme indicated to Physical/Health related issue; The walking class is for being healthy. Final theme showed their bored and loneness; Having different day from yesterday!
