웨스트민스터신앙고백과 예배모범에 나타난 예배의 규정적 원리(Regulative Principle of Worship)에는 성경에 명시적으로 지시되지 않은 예배요소를 첨가하는 것은 인간의 필요한 추론에 의해 만들어진 것이며, 여기에는 어떠한 타협이나 가변적인 것이 있어서는 안 된다‘는 견해를 담고 있다. 이러한 총회의 문서들은 대체로 당시의 역사적·신학적 맥락을 통해 상황적으로 만들어졌으며, 청교도 사상을 통한 당시 예배에서의 과도한 시정 노력은 그 신학적 전개에 있어서 극단적인 표현과 반응들을 담고 있다. 이러한 웨스트민스터 신앙고백과 예배모범은 한국장로교 신학의 기반이 되었으며 예배의 규정적 원리를 통해 한국 보수적 교단의 예배 실행에서 목회자 가운, 교회력, 강단장식, 십자가, 예전적 사물의 사용, 성례전의 방식 등의 예배요소에 과도한 규제적 원칙들이 여전히 남게 되었다. 이것은 역설적이게도 청교도들이 영국국교회와의 예배에 관한 논쟁 속에서 그렇게 담고자 했던 아디아포라(adiaphora)에 해당하는 것으로 예배에서의 구원과 상관없는 문제에 대한 선택적 자유에 관한 논의이다. 규정적 원리의 적용은 성경 텍스트의 문화적 배경에 대한 이해뿐만 아니라 구속사의 점진적인 전개에 비추어 바라보는 통전적 이해를 통해 이루어져야 한다. 그간 한국교회는 교단과 교파적 입장에 따라 예배 예전에 대한 깊은 간극을 보여왔다. 또한 규정적 원리를 통해 적용된 예배의 과도한 규제적 원리는 편견의 깊은 골과 갈등을 만들어냈는데 이를 극복하고 성례전적 일치와 다감각적인 풍성한 예배요소의 회복과 예전적 일치를 이뤄가기 위해서는 예배원리에 대한 역사적·신학적·실천적 통찰이 요구된다. 본 연구는 한국장로교회의 예배전통에 대한 역사적 유산이자 예배신학의 기본이 되는 웨스트민스터 신앙고백과 예배모범의 교리를 새롭게 고찰해 보고 예배 회복을 위한 개혁과 전해오는 예배관습 사이에서의 혼란과 복잡한 문제를 풀어나가는 대안(對岸)적 통로를 아디아포라적 이해를 통해 풀어가고자 한다.

In the doctrines shown in the ‘Westminster Confession of Faith’ and the ‘Directory of Worship’, the ‘Regular Principle’ of worship has the view that adding worship elements that are not explicitly directed in the Bible is made by human necessary reasoning, and there should be no compromise or variable in the worship. These documents of the Conference were generally made situationally through the historical and theological context of the time, and it is believed that the excessive efforts of correction in the worship service through Puritan ideas contain extreme expressions and reactions in its theological development. The Westminster Confession and Directory of Worship became the basis of Korean Presbyterian theology, and through the Regulatory Principle of Worship, excessive regulatory norm were still left in worship elements such as pastor's gown, liturgical year, pulpit decoration, cross, use of holy things, and way of sacrament in the practice of worship of Korean conservative denominations. This is paradoxically the adiaphora that Puritans have sought to contain in the debate about worship with the church of England, and it is a discussion about selective freedom on the issue that is not related to salvation in worship. The application of such regulative principle should be done through a holistic understanding of not only the understanding of the cultural background of the bible text but also the main subject of the gradual development of the salvation history. In the meantime, the Korean church has shown a deep gap in the worship and sacramental liturgy according to the denomination and denominational position. Also, the regulatory tradition of worship through the regulative principle caused prejudice and conflict in the practice of worship between denominations, In order to overcome this, historical, theological and practical insights about worship are needed to unfying the sacramental agreement and for restore the multi-sensory worship elements. This study is to examine the doctrine of ‘Westminster Confession of Faith’ and ‘Directoty Worship’, which is the historical heritage of the Korean Presbyterian Church's worship tradition and the basis of worship theology, and to find this problem through the adiaphora understanding as an the channel for work of building opposite hills to solve the complicated problems between the efforts for worship recovery and the customs that are transmitted.
