본 연구의 목적은 퇴계 사단칠정의 현대적 의미를 분석하여 퇴계 사단칠정이 지니는 스포츠 윤리적 의미가 무엇인 지 고찰하는데 있다. 연구방법은 문헌연구로 퇴계 사단칠정 논쟁을 확인할 수 있는 ｢심통성정도(心統性情圖)｣를 중심으 로 고찰하였다. 퇴계의 사단(四端)이 선한 본성을 전제하고 말한 덕성윤리의 사고에 속하는 개념이라고 한다면, 칠정(七 情)은 규범의 준수를 선행조건으로 한 의무윤리의 사고에 속한 개념이다. 또한 퇴계 사단칠정의 현대적 의미는 덕성윤리 와 의무윤리의 사고를 하나로 융합하여 이해한 사상이라는 것이다. 이를 근거로 사단칠정이 지니는 스포츠 윤리적 의미는 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 퇴계의 사단은 도덕 주체의 인성과 덕(德)을 강조한다는 점에서 스포츠 덕성윤리와 연결 가능하며, 퇴계의 칠정은 규범의 실천을 강조한다는 점에서 스포츠 의무윤리와 연결 가능하다고 파악된다. 둘째, 사단칠정의 윤리적 성격은 스포츠의 경쟁성과 규범성이라는 속성과 연결하여 이해할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 스포츠에서 경쟁 이 단지 승리만을 목적으로 하는 것이 아니라 상대방과 최고의 수행을 겨루는 협력의 과정임을 중시하는 속성을 지니고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 스포츠는 경쟁에서 규범의 실천을 강조하는 속성도 지니고 있기 때문이다. 셋째, 퇴계는 사단의 확장을 통해서만 선한 행위를 도출할 수 있다고 인식하였다. 이는 스포츠의 도덕 갈등상황에서 선한 행위를 도출하기 위해서는 도덕 주체자의 인성함양의 노력이 수반되어야 한다는 덕성윤리의 강조의 의미로 이해된다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the sports ethical implications of Toegye's sadanchiljeong by analyzing the contemporary significance of Toegye's sadanchiljeong. The research methodology is literature review revolving around Sim-tong-seongjeong -do in which Toegye's argument about sadan-chiljeong theory can be identified. While Toegye's sadan is a concept belonging to thinking on ethics concerning virtues premised on good human nature, chiljeong is a concept belonging to thinking on ethics concerning obligation, with adherence to norms as a prerequisite. Furthermore, Toegye's sadan-chiljeong has modern significance in that it understands thinking on ethics concerning virtues and that on ethics concerning obligation by merging them into one. Based on this, sports ethical implications of sadan-chiljeong can be summarized as follows: First, Toegye's sadan can be linked to sports ethics concerning virtues in that it emphasizes a moral subject's 'character' and 'virtue' and his chiljeong to sports ethics concerning obligation in that it emphasizes 'the practice of norms' respectively. Second, the ethical characteristics of sadanchiljeong can be understood in linkage to the sports attributes of competitiveness and normativity. For sports have the attribute of stressing the cooperative process of contending for the best performance against the competitor, not merely aiming for victory. In addition, sports have the attribute of stressing the practice of norms in competition. Third, Toegye recognized that good deed can only be drawn from the expansion of sadan. This is understood as emphasis on ethics concerning virtues, which implies that a moral subject's efforts to cultivate character should be accompanied to derive good deeds in a situation of ethical conflict in sports.
