한국을 비롯한 전 세계에서 빠르게 진행되는 고령화 현상은 성공적 노화에 대한 관심을 증가시키고 있다. 성공적인 노화를 통해 노화에 따른 부정적 모습을 제거하고, 노년기 삶의 질 향상에 기여할 수 있기 때문이다. 지금까지는 성공적 노화에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인으로 신체적인 건강함이 주목받아 왔다. 그러나 성공적 노화에는 신체적 요소뿐만 아니라 기능적, 정서적, 사회적 요인 등 노인들의 삶의 질에 영향을 미치는 다양한 요인들이 복합적으로 작용한다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 성공적 노화에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 신체적, 정신적, 사회적으로 조화로운 삶을 의미하는 웰빙과 좋은 죽음을 의미하는 웰다잉에 주목하였다. 즉, 웰빙과 그 연장선에 있는 웰다잉은 노인들이 죽음에 대한 막연한 공포와 두려 움 같은 부정적 정서를 극복하여 성공적 노화를 돕는 새로운 개념으로 주목될 수 있을 것이다.

Older population in the world and S. Korea are increasing now. Due to the phenomenon, there is a growing interest in successful aging. The successful aging contribute to improve the negative aspect of the aging as well as to increase the quality of life in the older population. So far, most scholars have been focusing on physical health as a major factor of the successful aging. However, the successful aging may include functional, emotional, social and physical health, and these may be working in combination. According to the background, this study was focused on the interaction between well-being and well-dying as an consequence of the successful aging. In other word, understanding well-being and well dying may have an huge impact on overcoming negative emotions such as fear and anxiety. Therefore, closely related concept, well-being and well-dying, could be a new concept in the field of aging study.
