During much of the twentieth century, socialism was viewed as the major threat to capitalism. Even though they were supporters of capitalism, Joseph Schumpeter and Friedrich Hayek both wrote well-known books in the 1940s expressing the fear that socialism would displace capitalism, even though capitalism was the more productive economic system. After the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 followed by the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, capitalism appeared to triumph, but three decades later, socialism is seeing renewed popularity. Meanwhile, capitalism is being eroded from within through cronyism, corruption, and special interest politics, which capitalism’s critics view as components of capitalism. A popular backlash against a system of cronyism that appears to favor an elite few over the masses has presented an opening for supporters of socialism to offer it as an alternative.

20세기 대부분의 기간 동안 사회주의(Socialism)는 자본주의(Capitalism)에 대한 주요 위협으로 간주되었다. 특히 슘페터(J. Schumpeter)와 하이에크(F. Hayek)는 자본주의의 강력한 지지자들로서 1940년대에 저서들을 통해 자본주의가 더 생산적인 경제체제임에도 불구하고 사회주의가 자본주의를 대체할 것이라는 ‘우려’를 표명하였 다. 1989년에 베를린 장벽이 붕괴되고 1991년 소련연방이 해체된 후 자본주의는 승리 한 것처럼 보였다. 그러나 이로부터 30여년이 지난 후 사회주의가 다시 인기를 얻고 있다. 왜 그런가? 자본주의가 연고주의(cronyism), 부패, 특별이익(special interest) 을 위한 정치 등을 통해 내부로부터 붕괴되고 있기 때문이다. 자본주의 비판자들은 연고주의, 부패, 특별이익 등을 자본주의의 구성 요소들로 보고 있다. 다수의 대중들보 다 소수의 엘리트를 편애하는 ‘연고주의 자본주의체제’에 대한 반동은 사회주의 지지 자들에 의해 자본주의의 대안으로서 사회주의로의 대체가 주장되고 있다.
