본 연구는 수영 종목을 중심으로 전개되는 영화 <4등>을 통해 한국스포츠의 구조적 병폐인 스포츠폭력 문화의 모습을 살펴보고자 하였다. 분석을 위해 비판인론 관점에서 텍스트분석을 실시하였다. 영화 <4등>을 통해 비춰진 한국 스포츠폭력의 모습은 과도한 경쟁에서 비롯된 제일주의 문화가 낳은 우리 사회의 구조적 병폐에 한 단면의 모습이었다. 그동안 국내 스포츠의 경기력 발전에 있어 강압적 코칭과 폭력은 단기간에 성과를 내는데 있어 매우 효과적인 수단이었 다. 특히 코치 광수는 과거 선수시절 겪은 폭력을 비판하고 부정하면서도 경기력 향상을 위해서는 폭력이 필요함을 주장 하는 모습에서 왜 우리 스포츠계에 폭력이 정당화되고 되물림 되었는지를 잘 보여주고 있었다. 그리고 준호는 폭력이라 는 사각지대에 노출되어 불안해하고 있는 이 시대의 학생운동선수의 모습을 대변하고 있었다. 더욱이 폭력을 자신을 위 한 사랑의 매로써 받아들이고 피해자에서 가해자로 변해가는 장면에서 폭력에 대한 잘못된 인식을 그려내고 있었다. 마 지막으로 암묵적으로 폭력에 동조하고 묵인하면서 준호가 4등에서 벗어날 수 있도록 수단과 방법을 가리지 않는 엄마 정애의 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 과정보다 결과가 중요한 성과주의의 사회, 1등만 기억하는 잔인한 세상 그래서 필요한 수 단으로 인정되어버린 폭력문화는 대한민국 스포츠의 어두운 모습이다.

This study aims to examine the structural ills of Korean sports, the culture of sports violence, through the movie <4th place>, which revolves around swimming events. This researcher conducted textual analysis with the viewpoint of critical theory. The image of Korean sports violence shown in the movie <4th place) was a cross-section of the structural maladies of our society, which resulted from excessive competition. So far, coercive coaching and violence in the development of domestic sports' performance has been a very effective means of producing results in a short period of time. Coach Kwang-soo, in particular, criticized and denied the violence he experienced in the past, but insisted that violence was necessary to improve his performance, showing why violence was justified and relegated to the Korean sports community. And Junho was representing a student activist of this era who was nervous about being exposed to the blind spot of violence. Moreover, he portrayed a misconception of violence in the scene where he accepted violence as a love hawk for himself and turned from victim to assailant. Finally, he could see his mother's affection for him in any way to help Junho get out of the fourth place by tacit consent and acquiescence. A society of meritocracy where results are more important than process, a cruel world where only the first place is remembered, and a violent culture that has been recognized as a necessary means is a grim aspect of Korean sports.
