Hara Kagai’s “Socialist Kodan” during and after the Russo-Japanese War : Appropriation of Urban Space and Theater Culture
This paper analyzes activism that utilized theatrical performances by a socialist Hara Kagai (18801923) during and after the RussoJapanese War (190405). By referring to Roger Chartier’s (culture as) “appropriation,” I explore the relationship between politicality of urban popular culture and cultural aspects of a dissident political movement. Hara’s piece of the kodan genre and his own accounts on his performance at yose vaudeville theater indicate that it was the ambiguous politicality inherent in local theater culture that made appropriation of urban space and culture possible to inspire what the socialists imagined as “workers.”
