Shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes) could be work to resist the attack by Trichoderma species. It is a known fact that a brownish pigment is produced in the contact zone between the mycelia when L. edodes resists the attack of Trichoderma species in dual cultures. However, Trichoderma species can compete for space and nutrients more effectively than the cultivated mushrooms. Furthermore, they are able to produce toxic sencondary compounds, extracellular enzymes, as well as volatile organic compounds. In this study, I conducted an assay of the antagonistic ability of twelve identified Trichoderma species. For this purpose, sixteen representative stains of Trichoderma species were selected, and competition tests between Trichoderma species and shiitake mushroom (commercial strain A817 of L. edodes in Japan) were performed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at the three different temperatures (20, 25 and 30°C) for considering the temperature factor. In addition, I also did the competition test on sawdust media for assay the antagonistic ability of Trichoderma against L. edodes. These investigations were to evaluate the antagonistic potential of each Trichoderma species and to clarify the main competitors of shiitake mushroom cultivation against the L. edodes.
