2017년 벽두, 2천여 개의 출판사를 회원으로 두고 있는 국내 굴지의 서적도매상인 송인서적이 부도났다. 중소출판 사, 동네책방, 출판종사자들로 이어지는 출판생태계의 연쇄적 위기와 도산을 우려해 정부가 긴급지원 대책을 강구했지 만 대형서점과 온라인서점의 기세에 내몰린 작은 서점들과 영세, 독립출판사의 현실이 외면된 미봉책이라는 평이다29). 이는 출판을 단순히 업종의 차원이 아닌 ‘문화’의 층위에서 이해하고 출판생태계가 활성화 되도록 해야 함을 시사한다. 이 같은 맥락에서 홍대인근(서울시 마포구)의 출판사 밀집현상에 대한 탐구는 출판을 문화적 담론 안에서 이해할 수 있는 유의미한 시도라 할 수 있다. 특히 2006년 이후 마포구 서교동 소재 출판사들이 정부정책으로 조성된 파주 출판단지로 대거 이주했지만 이후 역이주하거나 대형판사들을 중심으로 북카페, 북살롱 등 홍대인근에 문화적 거점 을 만드는 현상은 주목할 만하다. 본 연구에서는 홍대인근에 출판사들이 집중적으로 소재하게 된 배경 및 특성을 지 역, 문화, 자원의 측면에서 파악하고 홍대인근과 파주출판단지의 비교를 통해 출판도시 조성에 미치는 요소들을 진단 함으로써 출판의 생태계를 이해할 것이다. 나아가 중소, 영세출판사를 비롯한 작은 서점들의 상생발전을 위한 방안을 모색하는 관점에서 기대와 전망을 예측해 보고자 한다.

At the beginning of 2017, Song-In Books, one of the most successful book wholesalers in Korea that had over 2,000 publishers as its clients, went bankrupt. The government sought for emergency support measures concerning the bankruptcy to avoid the chain reaction in the ecology of the publishing industry. However, the plan was abruptly established and implemented without considering the reality of small- and micro- publishers being forced out of business by mega online bookstores (Kim, 2017) and the author argues that publishing should not be understood only via the lens of business but via that of the arts and culture. The study on the re-clustering of publishers in Hong-dae (Hongik Univ. Seoul) district can be a meaningful attempt to understand how publishing industry (or ecology) is affected by culture. A noteworthy phenomenon is the re-migration of publishers who once moved the government-developed Paju publication complex since 2006 but came back to Mapo-gu Seogyo-dong area, which attracted cultural facilities such as book cafes and book salons, leading to the creation of the cultural epicenter we know today as Hongdae. In this study, the publishing ecosystem is examined by comparing the Paju book city and Hong-dae district and by exploring the cultural elements that affect the regional development. The comparative analysis yields some conclusions on why those publishers finally re-migrated to Hong-dae district especially concerning geographical and cultural advantages that entailed rich resources for small publishers. Eventually, suggestions are made for the mutual growth of small publishers and bookstores along with big players in the publishing ecosystem.
