많은 건축가들에게 설치는 종래의 실무 과정에서 나타나는 여러 제약 없이 그들의 아이디어를 탐구할 수 있는 직접적인 기회를 제공한다, 최근 전 세계적으로 미술관, 박물관 그리고 도시 공간 내에 건축가들에 의한 설치 작업이 확산되면서 설치는 건축적 수행 방식의 수단으로 적합하게 사용되고 있다. 현대 건축의 중요한 인물 중 하나인 쿠마 켄고는 오랫동안 그의 수행 방식의 일부로서 설치를 강조해왔다, 그의 작품에서 드러나는 설치를 포함해 건축가에 의한 설치 작품에 대한 조사는 건축물을 디자인하기 전에 그의 아이디어를 여러 관점에서 탐구하기 위함이다. 본 연구는 건축적 탐구 및 응용 수단으로서 설치의 가능성을 분석하기 위해 설치에 대한 건축적 이해를 바탕으로, 쿠마 켄고의 디자인 프로세스에서 나타나는 설치의 특성을 탐구해 그 가능성을 고찰하기 위함이다.

For many architects, installation presents a hands-on opportunity to explore an idea without many of the constraints found in a conventional practice. In recent years, proliferation of installation works by architects in galleries, museums and in urban spaces in cities around the world serve as an evidence of installation’s relevance as an alternate mode of architectural practice. Kengo Kuma, one of the leading architects in contemporary Japanese architecture, has long embraced installation as part of his practice. Examination of the works created by the architect spanning his career reveal installations were utilized for exploring various aspects of his ideas in which materiality, tectonics and sense of place were integral to Kuma’s architectural inquiry. This study examines installation as an alternate means of architectural inquiry and its potential in the context of architectural discourse over the past several decades, and relevance of installations as an extension of architectural practice through a survey of Kuma’s works and his design methodology.
