에도막부의 초대 쇼군 도쿠가와 이에야스는 사망 후 자신의 의지와 2,3대 쇼군의 정치적 의도에 의해 ‘동조대권현’이라는 신으로 신격화 되었다. 이에야스의 신격화의 특징은 도쿠가와 가문의 조상신으로서 의미를 가지고 있다. 또한 이에야스 즉 선조를 신격화하여 쇼군지배를 신적 군주의 지배로 연결시키고자 하였다. 이러한 신격화는 닛코동조사가 닛코동조궁으로 되는 과정에서는 천황과 쇼군과의 관계가 복잡하게 얽혀있었다. 그러나 확실한 점은 이에야스의 신격화가 천황에 의해서 완성되었다는 점이다. 즉 동조사의 동조궁으로의 승격이 이에야스 신격화에는 필수적인 요소로 생각되었다는 것이다. 또한 닛코동조궁의 창건된 배경은 막번체제의 안정을 목표로 한 것이었다.

Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of Tokugawa shogunate, was deificated as Tosho Daigongen after his death by his will along with political intention of the 2nd and 3rd shoguns. Deification of Tokugawa Ieyasu is characterized by the significance as ancient god of the Tokugawa family, first. By deificating ancestor, in other words, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the family wanted to associate the ruling of shogun with the ruling of king, the being that is equal to God. This deification was completed through construction of Nikko Tosho-gu Shrine. Such a deification became clear in the construction process of Nikko Toshogu Shrine. However, in the process of Nikko Toshosha becoming Nikko Toshogu the relationship between the Shogun and the Tennou is involved in a complex way. To be sure, it is that Ieyasu's deification was completed by the Tennou. That is, promotion to Toshogu of Toshosha was essential to the deification of Ieyasu. Moreover, the background that Nikko Toshogu was founded is that it aimed at stabilizing the shogunate system.

江戸幕府の初代将軍である徳川家康は死亡後、自分の意志とともに2、3代将軍の政治的な意図により｢東照大権現｣という神に神格化された。家康の神格化の特徴としては、徳川家門の神祖としての意味を持つのである。また、家康すなわち神祖を神格化して将軍支配を神的君主の支配と繋ごうとした。このような神格化は日光東照宮の創建過程で明確に現われた。しかし、日光東照社が日光東照宮になる過程では将軍と天皇との関係が複雑に絡んでいる。確であることは、家康の神格化が天皇によって完成されたことである。すなわち、東照社の東照宮への昇格が家康の神格化には欠かせないことであったことである。また、日光東照宮が創建された背景は、幕府体制の安定を目指したことにあることである。
