본고는 일본 고전문학 속 질투 모티프가 문학적으로 어떻게 변화되어 가는지 통시적으로 살펴보는 연구의 일환으로 질투 모티프가 상징적 의미가 부여된 뱀 모티프와의 결합을 통해 문학적 역할을 확장해 가는 양상을 중세 설화를 대상으로 고찰해 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 12세기 불교 설화집인 『금석이야기집(今昔物語集)』에는 남녀 애증으로 인한 여성의 질투에 대해 부정적인 시각을 담고 있다. 이후 편찬된 중세 설화집 『발심집(発心集)』과 『고금저문집(古今著聞集)』에는 여성의 질투 모티브가 상징적 이미지를 갖는 뱀과 결합되어 전체 이야기의 주제를 이끌어내는 중요한 문학적 역할을 하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 『고금저문집』에서는 질투의 감정을 품은 본처가 뱀으로 변하여 남편에게 직접적인 위해를 가하고 있다. 당시 여성들은 남편의 외도에 대해 직접적으로 분노를 표출할 수 없었을 것이다. 문학 작품은 그러한 현실적 한계성을 전제로 여성이 뱀으로 변신한다는 비현실적인 장치를 추가함으로써 원망의 정도를 표현할 수 있도록 했다. 질투 모티프가 뱀이라는 이미지와 결합하여 강력한 분노를 표출함으로써 이야기 전개는 등장인물의 죽음으로까지 이어진다. 당대 시대가 바라보는 질투에 대한 시각은 질투 모티프를 뱀 모티프와 결합시켰고, 이는 화자가 말하고자 하는 관념 주제를 가장 돋보이기 위해서였을 것이다.

This study aims to reveal Japanese medieval narratives with focusing on the way in which the jealousy-motifs extend the literary role through the combination with the symbolic meaning of the snake-motif as a part of the study to see how the jealousy-motifs in Japanese classical literature are literally changed. In Japanese buddhist narratives "Konjaku Monogatarishu“(circa 12th Century), it contains a negative view of the jealousy of women. In later medieval narratives such as "Hotsinshu" and "Kokonchomonju", women's jealousy-motifs combined with the symbolic image of the snake played an important literary role in drawing the subject of the whole story. Especially, in "Kokonchomonju", the woman that has jealous feelings turns into a snake and puts a direct harm on her husband. At that time, women would not have been able to express their anger directly at the husband's affair. Literary works have made it possible to express the degree of grudge by adding an unrealistic device that transforms a woman into a snake. By combining the image of jealousy-motifs with the image of a snake and expressing strong anger, story leads to the death of characters in the end. The view of jealousy in that time let jealous motif to combine with snake motif, which would be to highlight the idea topic that the speaker would like to say.

本稿は、日本古典文学における嫉妬モチーフの文学的変容を通時的に考察する研究の一環として、嫉妬モチーフと象徴性が付与された蛇モチーフとの結合で、文学的機能が拡大されていく様相を、中世説話を対象に考察することを目的としている。12世紀前半に成立したとされる仏教説話集『今昔物語集』には、男女関係において愛憎がもたらす女性の嫉妬について否定的な見方が示されている。以降の作品として『発心集』と『古今著聞集』には、女性の嫉妬モチーフが蛇と結合され、全体ストーリの主題を導くための重要な文学的な要素として機能している。 特に『古今著聞集』では、嫉妬する妻が蛇と成り、夫に直接危害を与えている。当時は、女性は夫の浮気に対して直接的に怒りを表現することが認められなかったため、その現実的な限界を踏まえた上、女性が蛇に変身するという非現実的な装置を用い、文学作品の中で女性の「恨み」や「妬み」の程度を表出したと考えられる。嫉妬モチーフと蛇の「悪」の象徴性と結合し、「嫉妬は許せないもの」であるという主題を明確にさせたとも言える。
