최근 외투기업의 경제적 효과에 관한 많은 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 이러한 연구들은 한 국가의 전체적인 경제적 효과를 분석했다기 보다는 부분에 초점을 둔 연구가 대부분이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 한계점을 극복하고자 외국인투자의 경제적 효과를 분석하기 위한 종합 모델을 만들고, 한국을 대상으로 ‘현지국(host country)의 관점’과 ‘투자자(investor)의 관점’에서 외국인직접투자(inward FDI)의 경제적 효과를 조사하였다. 연구 결과, 외투기업이 현지국 경제에 미친 효과는 긍정적인 부분이 부정적 부분보다 훨씬 크며, 그 범위도 우리가 일반적으로 생각하는 것보다 넓고, 그 효과의 정도는 항목에 따라 차이가 있었다. 본 연구는 각국 정부의 올바른 투자유치정책 수립에 도움을 줄 뿐 아니라, 이론적 측면에 있어서도 ‘현지국의 경제발전’과 ‘전략적으로 유치해야 할 기업’을 매칭시키는 기본적 틀을 제공했다는 데 큰 의의가 있다

Recently there has been sharp increase in the number of studies investigating the economic effects of inward foreign direct investment (FDI). However, previous studies have only focused on one or two effects and failed to deliver an overarching viewpoint. The goal of this study is to overcome this limitation by presenting a comprehensive analytical framework. This framework is then applied to the Korean case whereby the economic effects of inward FDI are presented from the perspectives of the host country as well as the investor. Results show that positive effects outweigh negative effects; that the scope of positive effects is broad; and that the degree of impact is varied across individual factors. This study will help policy makers to implement the appropriate strategy to attract inward FDI. Furthermore, the presented analytical model can be utilized as a basic framework, which can match the “level of host country’s economic development” with “the targeting company.”
