The theme of Chapter 1 is agreement of the convergence of the results of three research methodologies. The following three surveys indicated the same tendency, thus mutually reinforcing overall reliability. (1) The Japanese language landscape pictures and the multilingual signboards seen overseas indicated a geographical proximity effect. (2) The international census in the form of an opinion poll indicated the same tendency. (3) Several kinds of Google search techniques again offered the same results. Japanese is the 2nd or the 3rd language in Asia, and the 7th or 8th language in Europe. However, we should not be misled by surface patterns, and we must know the deep structure. In Chapter 2 the global and Japanese local geographical distribution of linguistic landscape will be considered, making use of brightness at night as a clue.
