현대 건축은 이미지 중심의 표현과 개념에 의해 정체성을 상실한 채 인간이 배제되거나 지리적, 역사적 맥락의 단절과 지역 문화의 배제, 장소성의 상실, 개념과 실제의 분리 등을 통하여 근대건축과 대립으로서가 아니라 자체의 한계성을 가지고 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 따라서 본 논문은 현대 건축에서 정체성을 위한 특정한 의미 파악하는 것보다는 현재 드러난 건축 작품의 원리의 부재를 보완하기 위한 설계 방법론의 처방적 방안으로 지역성을 주체적 틀(자세)로서 제시하고자 하는 것이 연구의 목적이다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는 본 논문은 상치적인 두 개념인 지역성과 기념비성이 서로 상호 보완적인 관계로서 전자는 넓은 의미의 보편성을 강조하는 가능한지, 그리고 후자는 지역의 특수성과 맥락을 반영하여 의미 있는 건축물로 존재 가능한지를 분석하고 서술하는 방법으로 연구를 진행한다.

It is not an exaggeration to state that contemporary architecture have limitations, not just as a comparison to modern architecture but as a whole, due to the loss of its identity incurred by image focused expression and concepts, and thereby resulting in the exclusion of humanity, historical and geographical context, local culture, regionality, and segregation of concept and reality. Therefore, this study, rather than determine the identity or characteristics of contemporary architecture, aims to suggest regionality as the identity framework (approach) as a prescriptive measure of architectural methodology which may compensate the lack of representative principles underlying architectural works. To this end, this study will analyze the conflicting concepts of regionality and monumentality in a complementary relationship, and analyze whether, under such terms, the former is able to be emphasized in a larger context, and whether the latter will be able to reflect the characteristics and context of the location and exist as architectural work which also carries meaning.
