본 연구는 쿠로스와 코레로 대표되는 아르키익기의 대형 인물상의 형성과 그것에 새겨진 명문과의 상관 관계를 다루고 있다. 초기 그리스 조각에서 명문은 조각상의 몸에서 주로 관찰된다. 니칸드레가 봉헌한 코레, 사모스의 초대형 쿠로스상, 메가라 히블라이아의 쿠로스, 프토온의 쿠로스, 사모스의 케라미에스 코레상들과 게넬레오스의 군상이 그러하다. 받침대에 명문이 남겨지는 가장 이른 사례는 에우티카르티데스의 받침대로, 후에 아티카 지역에서 제작된 프락시클레이아의 코레의 받침대에서 다시 만나게 된다. 이들 받침대의 명문은 조각가의 조형적 성취를 효과적으로 드러낼 수 있도록 삼차원적으로 배치되어 독립상의 조형미를 감상하도록 유도된다. 아르카익기 이후에는 받침대에 명문을 새기는 것이 일반화되는데, 명문은 문자가 독립상의 조형적 요소에서 분리되어 ‘읽는 대상’으로 한정되고 조각상이 응시와 감상의 대상으로 인식되는 현상을 반영하는 지표이다.

This study examines the significance of the inscriptions engraved on kouroi and korai of the Archaic period and how such inscriptions relate to the emergence of Greek monumental free-standing sculpture. In the early Greek sculpture, inscriptions would usually be engraved on the surface of statues, as observed in Naxian Nikandre kore, Samian colossal kuoros, kouros from Megara Hyblaea, Ptoon kuoros, Cheramyes korai, and the Geneleos Group. Otherwise the inscriptions would be carved on the bases of statues, as seen in the statues of Naxian Euthykartides and Attic Phrasikleia. The inscriptions on bases were intended as a three-dimensional representation so as to induce viewers to take up various viewpoints and thereby show off the sculptors' innovational achievements most effectively. In the post-Archaic periods when the inscriptions on the bases became a prevalent practice, the inscriptions began to be recognized as reading objects disparate from the figurative aspects of sculpture.
