본 연구는 혁신연구 분야에서 상대적으로 주목을 덜 받아왔던 서비스산업을 대상으로, 기업간 경쟁과 혁신활동과의 상관관계에 대한 분석을 시도하였다. 서비스산업의 혁신특성을 고려하여 혁신활동을 기술적 혁신과 비기술적 혁신으로 나누어 분석하였으며, 시장경쟁의 대리변수로 시장집중도(CR3)와 러너지수를 동시에 사용하였다. 또한 서비스기업의 혁신활동이 기업 경영성과에 어떠한 영향을 주는지도 함께 살펴보았다. 실증분석은 2001～2010년 기간의 KIS-VALUE DB의 기업재무 정보를 활용하였으며 내생성문제를 통제하기 위하여 GMM추정방법을 이용하였다. 분석결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째 시장이 보다 경쟁적일수록 서비스업의 기술적 혁신이 촉진된다는 결과를 얻었다. 둘째, 시장경쟁과 비기술적 혁신활동간의 상관관계에 대해서는 독점적 시장구조가 기업의 혁신에 대한 투자를 이끌어 내는데 보다 유리하다는 Schumpeter 가설이 일부 지지되었다. 셋째, 서비스기업의 혁신활동이 기업성과에 긍정적 영향을 미친다는 사실도 확인할 수 있었다.

Our study aims to analyze the Schumpeterian hypothesis in terms of the link between knowledge-intensive service sector competition and innovation, a topic that has not received much attention from researchers. We utilize both the Lerner index and CR3 as proxy variables for market structure, distinguish technological innovation from non-technological innovation by considering genuine innovation processes in services and investigate the impact of innovation on corporate performance using KIS-Value data over the 2001-2010 period. We obtain the following results. First, a more competitive market structure may provide a more favorable environment for innovation in knowledge-intensive service industries. Second, we partially confirm that competition in the knowledge-intensive service sector is a positive stimulus to non-technological innovation. Lastly, our estimation results indicate a positive relationship between innovation in knowledge-intensive service sector and corporate performance.
