예배 공간의 구조와 배열에 따라 회중들은 각각 다른 예배의 경험을 하게 된다. 실제로 예배 공간의 구조는 회중들의 예배 경험에 깊은 영향을 끼친다. 또한 예배 공간은 기독교 예배의 형식과 신학에도 영향을 끼친다. 하지만 반대로, 기독교 예배의 형식과 신학이 예배 공간의 구조를 변형시키고 변화를 초래하기도 한다. 그러므로 왜 교회 건물이 중요한지에 대한 신학적인 의미들을 찾는 것은 굉장히 중요한 일이기도 사실 현대의 회중들이 선호하는 예배 공간, 즉 사람들에게 매력적인 예배 공간은 기존의 인식과는 다르다. 큰 체육관이나 극장 혹은 콘서트 홀 같은 장소가 사람들에게 특히 젊은이들에게 매력적인 사실과 그것이 현대의 예배 공간을 디자인하는 주류가 되었음은 부인하기 어렵다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리가 끊임없이 물어야 하는 것은 예배 공간의 기능적인 측면뿐만 아니라 예배 공간이 내포하고 있는 신학적인 의미들이다. 분명한 것은 그러한 신학적인 의미들이 예배 공간의 본질이 무엇인가에 대한 주제들을 담고 있다는 사실이다. 성서와 기독교 역사는 예배 공간의 본질에 대한 좋은 가르침들을 주고 있다. 이 논문은 예배 공간에서의 빛의 사용과 의미를 고찰해 봄으로써 예배 공간의 본질이 무엇인가를 살펴보고자 한다. 시기적으로는 중세 이전 즉 성막에서 비잔틴 양식의 예배 공간까지 살펴보고자 한다. 이러한 조사를 통해서 우리는 ‘초기 기독교 예배 공간들이 우리에게 무엇을 가르치고 있는가?’를 관찰하게 될 것이다.

The structure of the worship space makes a difference in worship experience. It profoundly impacts our experience. And it used to affect Christian worship form and theology. On the contrary, Christian worship form and theology used to change the structure of worship space. It is very important to examine the theological basis for why church building architecture is important. I have certainly noticed that the modern preference for a large gymnasium, a theatre, or a concert hall dominates the church architectural trend. Nevertheless, we should continuously ask a question in terms of the theological implications that should be considered in our church architecture. And the theological implications should be subject about the nature of worship space. The Scripture and the Christian history give some good lessons about the nature of worship space. This article tries to examine the nature of worship space through the research of the use and meaning of light at worship space. Especially, this article focuses on the use and meaning of light at worship space in pre-medieval Christianity. Through article, we can observe “What do the worship spaces of early christianity teach?”
